Position Description
Oversee the strategy, coordination, and implementation of projects related to the digital transformation of China studies at the Fairbank Center. Oversee strategy, in consultation with the two Principal Investigators, to ensure the Fairbank Center’s leadership position in the field of digital China studies. Manage international collaboration between researchers to create a broad set of state-of-the-art Research Computing systems, tools, and software to enhance productivity in the pursuit of historical and contemporary China research. Coordinate and direct researchers to co-create and co-learn research activities and relevant advanced computing and data capabilities both locally and internationally. This job is a full-time position with full benefits for a five-year term. The position does not offer visa sponsorship. The position will report to the Principal Investigators with a dotted line to the Executive Director of the Fairbank Center.
The China Digital Humanities initiative is a pioneering project. The Faculty of Arts and Sciences and the Fairbank Center are already the leaders in this new field. This new project will be breaking new ground, allowing China scholars to map and analyze information in ways never before possible.
This position will be directing and coordinating the international team of coders and technology experts who will be creating new digital tools. There is no one currently at the Fairbank Center with the complex set of management and technical skills required to perform this job.
This position will work closely with a team of students of Chinese humanities and coders at both Harvard and in Europe and Asia. Specifically, the position will manage two to three post-doc researchers.

- Responsible for overseeing diverse research digital humanities research and technology projects, working with international collaborators. Manage a range of international coders and researchers through email, chats, Zoom meetings, and in-person consultations when possible
- Manage the building of research computing systems through regular engagements with the team. Direct the team in design, debugging and automating/scripting of complex research workflows alongside researchers. Manage interactions between researchers and technology providers, to ensure that the technology platform and system meets the requirements of researchers.
- Provide regular communications to systems and software/data professionals. Track and share developments in digital tools and approaches in the field of China studies. Enhance the learning with full awareness of the local and larger research computing and data landscape—in other words, tracking other worldwide China digital humanities platforms to ensure that we are developing the most cutting-edge systems.
- Build advanced curriculum and teach workshops for researchers to maximize their use of research computing.
