Job Purpose :

The Citadel, The Military College of South Carolina is seeking an Employee Relations Manager in the Office of Human Resources. The Employee Relations Manager reports directly to the Chief Human Resources Officer and is directly responsible for employee relations, performance management and related employee and supervisory training. Provides direct strategic HR guidance in the area of complex employee relations matters, organizational design and development, change management, disciplinary actions, grievances, contract interpretation issues; managing and conducting internal investigations.

Job Responsibilities :
  • Directs employee relations functions: Provides guidance to management, supervisors and employees in seeking solutions to performance, disciplinary and other employee relations issues
  • Responsible for hearing and investigating employee and supervisor complaints regarding general employee relations issues and unlawful discrimination protected by Title VII of the Civil Rights Act, Title IX, the ADA, FMLA USERRA, Pregnancy Discrimination Act, and other federal and state employment laws and regulations
  • Conducts workplace investigations and uses conflict resolution techniques to resolve workplace problems. Acts as a neutral party through all aspects of the investigation and ensures a prompt, fair, and neutral process for all parties. Working closely with legal counsel, prepares investigatory reports detailing matters clearly and concisely, along with suggestions for corrective actions.
  • Conducts research into related federal and state laws, regulations and policies to reduce or limit employee relations complaints and liabilities; composes and reviews written documents and assists supervisors in the progressive discipline process and oversees the grievance process
  • Coordinates with Chief Title IX Coordinator on employee concerns or allegations. Keeps updated on legal and regulatory issues associated with Title IX as it relates to sexual harassment and discrimination involving employees
  • Design and implement effective performance feedback tools to create and sustain a high-performance workforce. Provides direction and oversight to supervisors regarding substandard performance issues and performance improvement plans (PIP), if applicable
  • Proactively conduct surveys, focus groups, and gather information from employees for developing and creating a positive work environment
  • Participates in Staff Council and assists with employee recognition, work/life initiatives, and award programs
  • Provide support and guidance on a variety of workshops, trainings, and e-learning classes to meet operational and strategic organizational needs
  • Consult and coach managers and employees on disciplinary actions, providing guidance, problem resolution, and dispute mediation
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Psychology, or related field
  • Able to demonstrate progressive experience in managing the employee relations functions in a Human Resources Department
  • Experience with proven detail-oriented work style in collaboration with effective written and verbal communication skills

Preferred Qualifications :
  • Previous higher education experience
  • Master's degree preferred
