Position Announcement
Utah Valley University (UVU) is the largest student enrollment among teaching institutions in the state of Utah and ranked in the top ten on the Forbes Best-in-State Employers 2022 list. Utah Valley University is accepting applications for the Senior Director of Benefits and Compensation position. This position reports to the Vice President of People and Culture. The new Senior Director will administer, design, and analyze wage and salary programs, benefit offerings, and retirement plan offerings for all university employees.

Summary of Responsibilities

  • Leads/directs the compensation function and works with senior management to ensure that compensation strategy and programs support the University's business objectives, meet all legal requirements, and deliver value and equitable pay; designs, implements and performs ongoing evaluation of the University's compensation programs, including base pay, incentive pay and merit pay programs; establishes data collection and analysis processes for pay market, pay equity and other compensation studies; creates functional strategies and specific objectives to support functional infrastructure; provides leadership for a highly engaged compensation team that delivers high quality compensation programs, processes and issue solutions.
  • Directs and plans the overall design, implementation, communication and administration of the University's health and welfare benefit programs for employees; ensures that programs adhere to the current laws and regulations and support the University's strategic mission and vision; evaluates compliance with governmental regulations and competitiveness with other organizations; oversees health and welfare contracts, creating requests for proposals as required by state law; ensuring contract obligations are met by plan administrators; drive the execution of benefit annual renewals and enrollment processes and change management plans; build and maintain positive relationships with senior management, consultants, brokers, vendors and University community. Chairs the university's Benefits Committee, Co-chair the university's Self-Funded Oversight Committee
  • Acts as the retirement plan sponsor for the University. Directs and oversees the retirement plan design, employee eligibility, and investment choices. Responsible for regularly updating and amending the university retirement plans.


Minimum Qualifications
Graduation from an accredited institution with a master's degree or other advanced degree in Human Resource Management or closely related field plus five years of staff level experience or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience related to the Summary of Duties totaling ten years.

Licenses/Certifications:
PHR/SPHR Certification, SHRM/SHRM-CP Certification, HRCI Certification, or WorldatWork Certification CCP, CBP

Knowledge, Skill, and Abilities

  • Advanced knowledge of compensation best practices for staff and faculty including federal and state laws and regulations. A thorough and current knowledge of employment laws and regulations specifically those related to Affirmative Action, Equal Opportunity and employment. Advanced knowledge of FMLA, Workers Compensation, COBRA, ACA, and ERISA. Knowledge and understanding of the guiding principles for employment diversity in higher education. Knowledge and understanding of higher education and/or public sector recruitment and employment processes.
  • Advanced computer and writing skills including statistical analysis, report writing, word processing, spreadsheets, database management and client-server environments. Skill in statistics and math as utilized in data analysis. Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to effectively communicate with a wide-range of individuals in a diverse community.
  • Ability to work effectively with administrators, staff, faculty, organizations, and a wide variety of people from diverse backgrounds, both within and outside the University. Ability to manage many projects, people, and activities. Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines. Ability to use independent judgement and to manage and impart confidential information. Ability to plan and evaluate programs and processes. Ability to analyze problems and develop creative solutions to complex employee benefits issues.
