Position Announcement

The Department of Earth Science at Utah Valley University (UVU) invites applications for a full-time, Tenure-Track Assistant Professor position in Environmental Science and Management, to begin August 2023. The successful candidate will have a Ph.D. by August 2023 in a disciplinary or interdisciplinary field allied with the study of environment science, including but not limited to environmental management, atmospheric and climate science, earth systems science, hydrology, physical geography, and geology. We invite applications from candidates with expertise in water quality and treatment and/or wastewater management, but also will welcome expertise in a wide range of sub-disciplines including environmental change and sustainability, hydrology, soil science, climate and atmospheric science, and other related specialties. Responsibilities will include teaching lower and upper division courses in the candidate's area of expertise, specifically teaching our water quality and treatment course and other courses in our Environmental Science and Management program, as well as engaging in scholarship and supervision of undergraduate research, working to develop our environmental science and management program, and service. Excellent teaching skills and a strong commitment to effective teaching and undergraduate research are highly encouraged.

The Department of Earth Science consists of 13 full-time faculty, with a wide range of expertise in geography, geology, earth science education, and environmental science and management. We offer bachelor's degrees in Geography, Geology, Environmental Science and Management, Environmental Studies, Earth Science Education; and certificates in GIS and Water and Wastewater Operations. The department has excellent facilities (https://www.uvu.edu/earthscience/students/equipment_facilities.html) that include a 24-workstation GIS laboratory and additional high-powered computer workstations, survey-grade GNSS equipment, several sUAS for low altitude aerial photography and remote-sensing, and geochemical analytical facilities. Our workstations are well equipped with software including ArcGIS, ERDAS, ENVI, Agisoft, Adobe Creative Cloud, Trimble Pathfinder and Business Center, and Matlab. The department has excellent ties to the University of Utah, Brigham Young University, and Utah State University as well as local industry and governmental organizations.

UVU is in the Provo-Orem metropolitan area (Utah County) and has one of the fastest growing technology sectors in the nation. Utah County is one of the fastest growing communities in the US with a 30.8% growth rate between 2010 and 2022 and population of ~ 680,000. Orem sits at the foot of the Wasatch Mountains and offers truly outstanding recreational opportunities. Minimum Qualifications
- Ph.D. in environmental science and management or closely related field at the time of hire required.

- Evidence of potential for scholarly/creative work consistent with a teaching university.

- ABD applicants may be considered but Ph.D. degree must be completed by June 30, 2023.

Knowledge, Skill, and Abilities

  • Advanced knowledge of subject matter and course content of the courses to be taught which may include courses emphasizing both theory and practice.

  • Demonstrable knowledge of the theory and practice in undergraduate education and quantitative and/or qualitative methods in the field of environmental science and management.

  • Knowledge and skill in current instructional theories, strategies, techniques, and discipline content.

  • A record of curricular development, effective verbal and written communication, and the ability to work collaboratively with faculty, staff, and students.

  • The ability, desire, and skills to mentor undergraduate student research.

  • A growth mindset approach to supporting non-majors students in the department.

  • Knowledge of and expertise in current trends in education, engaged learning and service learning, learning technologies (e.g. digital technologies for classroom management, online, hybrid, and flipped classroom instruction, and distance education), public presentation, outcomes measurement and grant writing.

  • Ability to work effectively with faculty, staff, students, agency administrators, and community practitioners from diverse ethnic, cultural, and socioeconomic backgrounds.

  • Ability to serve on committees and perform service activities.
