Rank: Advanced Assistant or Associate Professor

Program: Ethnic Studies

Starting Date: Fall 2023

The Ethnic Studies Program at California State University San Marcos (CSUSM) invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position at the level Advanced Assistant or Associate Professor. We seek a candidate whose teaching, research, and community and professional service are firmly situated within the broader context of critical, comparative, and relational Ethnic Studies. In particular, we seek applications from candidates whose research and/or teaching focuses on historical and/or contemporary social movements for liberation, decolonization, and/or abolition.

Guided by the original visions of the Third World Liberation Front and aligned with contemporary Critical Ethnic Studies pursuits of activist scholarship and insurgent critique, CSUSM Ethnic Studies is committed to building a relevant education that is grounded in community engagement, public scholarship, and cross-cultural solidarity. As a small, emerging program—situated on the traditional homelands of the Payómkawichum (Luiseño) peoples, located in North County San Diego, approximately 50 miles north of the U.S.-Mexico border, we exist at the crossroads of many local communities whose migrations and (re)settlements have been profoundly shaped by histories and structures of colonialism, imperialism, and war. Situated in this place and in these relationships, CSUSM Ethnic Studies seeks to produce knowledge and build pedagogies that are in ongoing dialogue with the intergenerational struggles and dreams of these regional and global communities. Through comparative, relational, transdisciplinary, and intersectional frameworks, current CSUSM Ethnic Studies faculty generate curricular, research, creative, and/or service projects related to: decolonization; cultural resistance; poetics; music, dance, and embodied knowledge/memory; Latinx and Chicanx indigeneities; Filipina/o/x American literatures; and historiographies of solidarity.

The successful candidate should be prepared to take on leadership roles in the development of the Ethnic Studies Program in areas such as: faculty mentorship; curriculum development; budget management; program assessment; and campus and community outreach and engagement. Additionally, the successful candidate will be expected to develop and teach courses for undergraduate majors and minors in Ethnic Studies, and for students looking to fulfill the Area F General Education requirement, i.e. CSU Ethnic Studies Graduation Requirement, to maintain an active and sustainable research and/or creative activity agenda, and to engage in meaningful university, community, and professional service.

Minimum Qualifications:

- Ph.D. in Ethnic Studies, or relevant/aligned interdisciplinary field.

- Demonstrated record of curricular and program development in comparative Ethnic Studies or a relevant/aligned interdisciplinary field.

- Demonstrated record of substantial and meaningful service to department, college, university, community and/or profession.

- Demonstrated record of coordinating community-based and/or public-facing programs, initiatives, and/or projects.

- Demonstrated record of developing and teaching courses in comparative Ethnic Studies, and/or in relevant/aligned interdisciplinary field.

- Demonstrated record of innovative, high-impact teaching and mentoring.

- Demonstrated potential for developing and teaching undergraduate courses focusing on social movements for liberation, decolonization, and/or abolition.

- Demonstrated publication—or equivalent presentation/performance—record of meaningful research and/or creative activity.
- Demonstrated potential for continuing and/or (re-)developing a meaningful and sustainable research and/or creative activity agenda.

Preferred Qualifications:

- Demonstrated experience as program director, department chair or associate chair, or experience in similar project/program management.

- Demonstrated record of effective mentorship of junior faculty from historically marginalized and underserved communities.

- Demonstrated record of managing project, program, and/or departmental budgets.

- Demonstrated record of developing and sustaining collaborative research and community projects with colleagues, students, and/or local communities.

- Notable publication—or equivalent presentation/performance—record in Ethnic Studies journals and/or relevant/aligned academic journals/platforms.

- Assume leadership and/or major responsibilities in the ongoing development of Ethnic Studies;

- Mentor junior faculty in Ethnic Studies and affiliate faculty;
