Job Details

The Mathematics and Statistics Department (https://scse.d.umn.edu/about/departments-and-programs/mathematics-statistics-department) in the Swenson College of Science and Engineering at the University of Minnesota Duluth (UMD) invites applications for a tenured position in Statistics at the rank of Associate or Full Professor.  We welcome applicants whose research expertise is in applied math or statistics, and we are particularly eager to identify a colleague who will step into a leadership role within the Department and develop a data science program.  This full-time, 9 month position will begin on August 21, 2023. The successful candidate will have established a successful independent research program, ideally supported with external funding. Additionally, the Department is interested in supporting research scholars whose research contributes to diversity, inclusivity, and equity. The successful candidate will have teaching responsibilities in undergraduate and graduate curriculum. They will also contribute to graduate and undergraduate teaching, advising, and mentoring, while supporting diversity and inclusion, and a commitment to justice. Service to the Department, College, and University is also expected. Candidates must have a minimum of 5 years experience as a tentured/tenure-track faculty member with a PhD in Statistics or a closely related discipline. Experience with effective and innovative teaching methods, such as active learning, is preferred.

The Department of Mathematics and Statistics is committed to providing engaging and contemporary and effective learning environments for all students. We offer undergraduate programs in Mathematics, Statistics, and Actuarial Science, and a master’s program in Mathematical Sciences. Opportunities exist for collaboration with faculty across campus, as well as scientists at the Natural Resources Research Institute, the Large Lakes Observatory, the Institute on the Environment, and various local, state, and federal agencies.

The University of Minnesota Duluth is especially interested in recruiting and retaining a diverse faculty to maintain the excellence of the University, and to offer students richly varied disciplines, perspectives and ways of knowing and learning. The University of Minnesota Duluth values of justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion are essential to achieving excellence. We strongly encourage women, Indigenous, LGBTQIA+, Black, Latinx, Asian American, Hawaiian/Island Pacific, mixed race, and disabled scholars to apply. We favor candidates who can contribute to the College's distinctive educational objectives, which promote interdisciplinary perspectives and intercultural understanding with social responsibility and the ethical implications of knowledge and action.

We recognize that excellence in teaching and research form the basis for any successful candidate. To that end, we are implementing an anonymized search process. See https://z.umn.edu/scsecareers for a description of the application steps and access to the online application portal. Applications must include only four documents: a combined anonymized research and teaching statement (7 pages max) a statement that demonstrates a commitment to justice, equity, inclusion, and a diverse student population (2 pages max); a curriculum vita; and a list of four professional references.  Go to the University of Minnesota Job Site and search for Job ID 352623. Please direct questions about this position to Dr. Kate Petersen (mathstat2022@d.umn.edu). Review of complete applications will start January 1, 2023 and continue until the position is filled.
