The Department of Human Ecology in the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences at the University of California, Davis is recruiting for a full-time, tenure track, Assistant Professor of Teaching (Lecturer with Potential Security of Employment/LPSOE), with a preferred emphasis in Lifespan Development and Family Studies to teach classes for the Human Development and Family Studies (HDFS) program. This is an academic year (9-month) position with an anticipated start date of July 1, 2023. LPSOE faculty are Academic Senate faculty members whose expertise and responsibilities center on undergraduate education, and scholarly analysis/improvement of teaching methods.

The appointee is expected to carry out high-level and innovative teaching in the areas of Lifespan Development and Family Studies, fitting with the broad goals of the department. The appointee may be assigned not more than five courses per year in departmental undergraduate curricula as determined by the department chair. Example courses include but are not limited to HDE 100A Infancy and Early Childhood, HDE 100B Middle Childhood and Adolescence, HDE 100C Adulthood and Aging, HDE 104 Children in Families, Schools, Communities, and HDE 120 Research Methods in Human Development. Teaching assignment quantities are based on enrollment, scope (classroom, field, laboratory) as well as career stage of the appointee in addition to the needs of the unit. The candidate will also have undergraduate advising and curricular development responsibilities.

The LPSOE will have a primary focus on teaching lifespan development, developmental trajectories, and/or development in context. The appointee will also be expected to demonstrate continued professional growth and enhance their value to the University. Examples of professional growth include the following contributions and achievements: (i) research and publication in the candidate's subject-matter discipline, (ii) pedagogical or curricular innovation, (iii) research and publication on pedagogy, (iv) professional activity in professional organizations, and (v) academic leadership within the University beyond normal service obligations. Performance of departmental and university service is expected, including general service to all program units within the department (e.g., consulting with curriculum committees in the three programs of the department). The appointee will have a leadership role in the scholarship of teaching and learning, working with faculty in the Human Ecology department to develop, implement and assess new pedagogical initiatives, and develop a successful discipline-based pedagogical research program as guided by the department, e.g. human sciences.

Other preferred qualifications include documented success in some or all of the following areas as related to human development: innovative teaching methods for large enrollment undergraduate classes, use of evidence-based teaching practices, use of modern instructional technology including virtual models, ability to identify, develop and assess effective teaching strategies for diverse student populations (i.e., diverse racial/ethnic groups, first generation college students, etc.), conducting applied education research, especially as related to student engagement and working with diverse populations as consistent with a successful scholarship of teaching and learning.

This recruitment is conducted at the Assistant Professor of Teaching rank. The resulting hire will be at the Assistant Professor of Teaching rank, regardless of the proposed appointee's qualifications.

Initial review of applications will be conducted using anonymized versions of the Statement of Teaching and the Statement of Contributions to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. Applications demonstrating sufficient potential based on this review will be advanced to full review.

The University of California is committed to creating and maintaining a community dedicated to the advancement, application, and transmission of knowledge and creative endeavors through academic excellence, where all individuals who participate in University programs and activities can work and learn together in a safe and secure environment, free of violence, harassment, discrimination, exploitation, or intimidation. With this commitment, UC Davis conducts a reference check on all first-choice candidates for Academic Senate Assistant Professor or Lecturer with Potential for Security of Employment, Steps 4, 5, or 6, or Acting Professor of Law positions. The reference check involves contacting the administration of the applicant's previous institution(s) to ask whether there have been substantiated findings of misconduct that would violate the University's Faculty Code of Conduct. To implement this process, UC Davis requires all applicants for any open search for assistant professor to complete, sign, and upload the form entitled “Authorization to Release Information” into RECRUIT as part of their application. If an applicant does not include the signed authorization with the application materials, the application will be considered incomplete, and as with any incomplete application, will not receive further consideration. Although all applicants for faculty recruitments must complete the entire application, only finalists considered for Academic Senate Assistant Professor or Lecturer with Potential for Security of Employment, Steps 4, 5, or 6, or Acting Professor of Law positions will be subject to reference checks.
