Marshall University seeks an outstanding and experienced leader to serve as the Director of the School of Nursing in the College of Health Professions. With the appointment of its new president, Brad D. Smith, the university, founded in 1837 and named after the fourth U.S. Supreme Court Chief Justice, John Marshall, is poised to build upon its past strengths and develop its vision for a future in support of its students and its region. The next Director of the School of Nursing will be an innovative, dynamic, and transformative leader who will be a change-agent in bringing the school to the next level.

THE SCHOOL OF NURSING

The School of Nursing has a total enrollment of 827. It has a traditional 4-year Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) program and a BS/BA to BSN program, both of which prepare professional nurse generalists to work with individuals, families, groups, and communities in health care settings. Students participate in a wide variety of clinical rotations. Graduates are eligible to apply to take the registered nurse licensing examination (NCLEX-RN). The school’s online RN to BSN program provides nurses who have graduated from either a nationally accredited associate degree program or diploma program with a mechanism for obtaining a BSN degree. This flexible program is online and allows practicing nurses to expand their capacity for critical thinking and clinical judgment.

The School of Nursing also has two graduate programs. The Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) program prepares graduates for advanced practice nursing in a variety of practice settings, particularly in rural and/or under-served communities. The MSN program offers five areas of emphasis: Family Nurse Practitioner, Nursing Administration, Nursing Education, Nurse Midwifery, and Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner. The latter two are in cooperation with Shenandoah University in Winchester, Virginia. The Doctor of Nursing Practice program prepares advanced practice nurses to practice at the highest level of professional nursing. Students experience customized learning during online asynchronous courses. This program will be accredited through the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education.

The Baccalaureate and Master’s/Post-Master’s Certificate programs (includes Family Nurse Practitioner, Nursing Administration and Nursing Education areas of emphasis) are accredited by the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN).

THE UNIVERSITY

Marshall University is a public comprehensive research university with a rich history as one of the oldest institutions of higher learning in West Virginia. Marshall advances the public good through innovative, accredited educational programs. The university is in Huntington, West Virginia, with additional campuses in South Charleston, Point Pleasant, and Beckley. The university enrolled 11,143 students: 8,017 undergraduates, 2,494 graduate students, and 632 first professional degree students in fall 2021. It achieved Doctoral University, High Research Activity, R2 status in 2018 and offers more than 150 undergraduate, graduate, and professional degree programs organized into seven academic colleges and two schools. Known as the Thundering Herd, the university participates in the NCAA Division I Sun Belt Conference in 14 sports and has a National Championship soccer team.

THE COMMUNITY

Marshall University is situated in a region of great natural beauty. Huntington is nestled in the heart of the Appalachian Mountain region and is bordered by the Ohio River and surrounded by a variety of state and national forests. Huntington is 50 minutes west of the state capital in Charleston and offers many amenities, including a symphony orchestra, a museum of fine arts, and an artist series. Huntington, West Virginia won the title of America’s Best Community after being named the Grand Prize winner in the America’s Best Communities Competition in 2017. Huntington also features a pedestrian trail system, numerous local restaurants, a variety of festivals, and the Central City antique district. Although Huntington is only a few hours’ drive from major metropolitan areas (e.g., Cincinnati, Columbus, Nashville, Lexington, Louisville, and Pittsburgh), West Virginia’s population density is considerably less than the national average and the state is considered one of the nation’s safest.
