Job Summary/Basic Function

The plumber will perform maintenance, inspection, repair, replacement, and installation work on plumbing systems, sewer line systems, or distribution lines that are both exterior and interior to facilities. Work involves measuring, cutting, threading, bending, and assembling pipe; troubleshooting, repairing, assembling, or replacing fittings, fixtures, and components; and utilizing plumbing and pipefitting installation drawings, blueprints, and schematics. This position will assist other trades employees or supervisors with complex plumbing projects and assigning and demonstrating plumbing related tasks to other trades and maintenance employees during the completion of a specific work-order. Work is performed independently and checked upon completion for adherence to guidelines and quality and timeliness standards.

Annual Salary Range: Salary range is $37,144.00 – $42,836.00 plus comprehensive benefits starting on the first day of employment, including:
  • Health insurance – Low bi-weekly premium. Employees pay 5% of bi-weekly salary for benefit coverage with ability to pay 2.5% when participating in the wellness program.
  • Dental insurance – Coverage is free to employee and dependents after 90 days
  • Vision insurance – Coverage is free to employee and dependents after 90 days.
  • Group life insurance – equal to annual salary (up to $40,000.00) at no cost to the employee
  • Retirement – 2 plans to choose from
  • Tuition waiver – employee, spouse, and dependents are eligible
  • Vacation leave – up to 11 days accrued per year for first 3 years, increases to 19 days per year after 3 years
  • Sick leave – up to 11 days accrued per year, including up to 5 days per year that can be taken to care for a family member
  • Holiday leave – Up to 12 days per calendar year

Required Qualifications
  • Three years of experience in the installation, repair, and maintenance of plumbing components and fixtures OR an equivalent combination of experience and training.
  • Knowledge of:
    • methods, materials, tools, practices used in the trade.
    • occupational hazards and safety precautions involved.
    • flows, pressure, and capacity of water tanks and lines.
    • the care and use of tools used in the installation, repair, and maintenance of plumbing systems, fixtures, and components.
  • Ability to:
    • establish and maintain effective working relationships.
    • read and interpret plumbing blueprints, drawings, and schematics.
    • properly use/care for tools.
    • detect equipment defects and make repairs.
    • follow oral/written instructions.
    • lift 50 lbs. without assistance; drive maintenance vehicles.
    • work in adverse weather, confined spaces, and at varying heights.
    • wear required Personal Protective Equipment.
  • Proficient safe operation of tools of the trade and work practices.
  • Excellent oral, written, interpersonal communication skills.
  • Basic PC skills.
  • Evidence of a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Successful interview.
  • Successful completion of three background checks.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Master plumbing certification.
  • Current plumbing license.
  • Certified pool operator.
  • Certified water treatment operator.
  • Pipefitting and welding experience.
  • Boiler inspection certification.

Special Instructions to Applicants
  • This position is represented by a labor union and is subject to the terms and conditions of the AFSCME Collective Bargaining Agreement.
  • This position is designated an essential employee position. Employee is expected to report to work during their designated shift during emergency situations, university closures or delays. Work performed during these events will require duties typically outside normal job duties and functions such as shoveling snow or assisting in storm recovery activities.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license.
  • Employee may be contacted about and respond to issues after designated shift.
    • Response may require onsite presence to resolve issue or recalling appropriate personnel (employees or contractors) to assist with the problem.
