Associate Director, Student Conduct (4031)

Position Summary

The Associate Director is primarily responsible for overseeing, investigating, and adjudicating individual and student organizational conduct, supporting students through the process as well as the integration of restorative practices throughout the conduct process.

The Associate Director of Student Conduct will work as a liaison to collaborate and coordinate training to create leadership and intercultural competence opportunities to support student and staff learning and development. The Associate Director is to assist in the administration of a campus-based, transformative, student-centered student conduct system. The Associate Director has primary responsibility for maintaining the institutions case management software (Maxient Conduct Manager).

The responsibilities of this role are considered administrative in nature and must be performed with a high level of professionalism and judgement. The Associate Director must be capable of prioritizing issues efficiently and identifying effective means of resolution. The decisions made by the Associate Director have an impact on the entire NIU community and must be performed with consistency and fairness.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Support the mission, policies, and procedures of the department and university. Investigate and adjudicate cases for individual student and student organizational conduct. Coordinate and lead student conduct program elements related to restorative justice practices in collaboration with all university departments as necessary.
  • Develop and implement programs and training around restorative justice practices and mediation as alternative conflict resolution strategies. Counsel, advise, and refer students on student conduct matters including but not limited to their rights and responsibilities in the student conduct process.
  • Coordinate departmental assessment initiatives and prepare routine reports for the Office of Student Conduct and the Division of Student Affairs. Coordinate and lead student conduct trainings. Administer the institutional case management software (Maxient Conduct Manager) to ensure seamless operation of the software for all the entities utilizing the software.
  • Seek opportunities to work collaboratively with departmental, divisional, and campus partners through committees, liaison relationships, and other interactions. Ensure compliance with applicable laws in relation to conduct adjudication and on-going training.
  • Assist with providing leadership and consultation in responding to student needs and campus issues. Serve as a Campus Security Authority and assist with the process of reporting crimes to maintain accurate and timely crime statistics to increase the overall safety of the campus.
  • Serve as mediator (neutral observer) in applicable cases that can be resolved through voluntary resolution/mediation. Ensures the confidentiality of all student conduct records by supervising the maintenance and security of such records.
  • Provides ongoing outreach and education for campus partners and community leaders (including students, faculty, staff, parents, and community members) involving student conduct matters.
  • Serve as a resource to faculty, staff, and students who seek to resolve conflict. Serve as a Hearing Officer for matters handled by Student Conduct. Communicate and develop policies related to current legal trends and legislative updates in student conduct.
Minimum Required Qualifications (Civil Service)

CREDENTIALS TO BE VERIFIED BY PLACEMENT OFFICER
  • Master’s degree in higher education, student affairs or equivalent in a related field.
  • Two (2) to three (3) years of professional experience in any of the following: case management, student conduct, residence life, and or Title IX.

  • Three (3) to five (5) years of working experience as a part of a case management support team, experience working with college aged students and campus partners, and demonstrated passion for students’ development and learning.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and skill with Maxient case management platform.
  • Demonstrated ability to foster strong working relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop knowledge of, respect for, and skills to engage with those of other cultures or backgrounds.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of applied student development theories, counseling and intervention models, and student privacy/records laws.
  • Demonstrated experience with data collection and analysis, writing executive summaries and drafting reports for review by other staff
  • Demonstrated experience maintaining the Code of Student Conduct to ensure accurate and up-to-date campus information and applicable college student polices and resources, development content and maintain the Student Conduct website
  • Demonstrated commitment and understanding of a diverse population of students.
