Job Summary:

The University of Wisconsin Carbone Cancer Center (UWCCC) Flow Cytometry Laboratory is a shared Resource Laboratory established in 1988. The facility maintains two laboratories on the University of Wisconsin-Madison campus: the main facility located in the Wisconsin Institutes for Medical Research (WIMR) and a full-service satellite facility in the UW Biotechnology Center. The mission of the UWCCC Flow Lab is to maintain a cutting-edge facility that provides researchers the technical and educational support for fluorescence-based single cell analysis and isolation to further the characterization and understanding of cellular function, biomarkers, pathology, and treatment in basic, translational, and clinical research projects.

The UWCCC Flow Lab serves over 200 individual research labs and about 500 individual users per year. Research supported by the UWCCC Flow Lab is mainly cancer-related biomedical research, but also includes other biomedical research areas; veterinary research, immunology, virology, bacteriology, botany, and biomedical engineering.

The Instrumentation Technician role uses flow cytometry, spectral cytometry, image cytometry and cell sorting to provide support to researchers on the UW-Madison campus. Responsibilities will include daily operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of fluorescence activated cell sorters. Other duties include daily instrument startup, quality control, maintenance, and troubleshooting. This position will also provide general support services to researchers which include experimental and protocol design and consultation; training in the use and operation of all instruments as well as assistance, training, and consultation in data analysis.

Responsibilities:

Provides technical expertise in a research, development, or scientific program. Designs, modifies, and adapts equipment to create unique systems in support of research, development, or instruction, involving, but not limited to, the disciplines of electronics, mechanical/thermal systems, optics, and/or computers.
  • 40% Provides technical expertise to staff, researchers, clients, and students in the installation and use of equipment and instruments, exercising discretion and independent judgment to meet unit goals
  • 15% Develops, integrates, tests, and modifies sophisticated scientific equipment to support research/clinical initiatives and unit directives
  • 15% Designs, plans, and performs preventative and reactive maintenance on equipment to ensure optimal and safe operation
  • 15% Answers questions and provides technical information regarding instrumentation to staff, researchers, clients, and students
  • 5% Assists with the preparation of grant proposals and applicable documentation
  • 10% Investigates new research processes and technology solutions in collaboration with research/clinical staff, students, and clients

Qualifications:

Required Relevant Qualifications:
Excellent analytical, communication, and organizational skills
Ability to prioritize and multi-task

Preferred Relevant Qualifications:
Experience with quality assurance, quality control, and good laboratory practices
Experience with cytometry appreciated, but not required
