Job Summary:

At the Department of Biochemistry, we provide a world-class education and innovative and collaborative research environments to thousands of students, faculty and staff. Our job, as the Biochemistry External Relations team, is to learn about the work being done by biochemistry researchers, including graduate students, faculty, and staff, and help share those stories with journalists, funding agencies, alumni, donors, and the public. We are searching for a science writer to help us showcase Biochemistry's research and programs and the people behind them.

As a science writer, you would be joining a collaborative and growing team of communicators and share responsibilities for finding and pitching and writing stories. You would also research, write, and edit content for external and internal communications projects, including newsletters and impact reports sent to donors, and work with other team members to help develop written materials related to these projects.

Working with the communications manager, you would plan and set goals for stories ranging from short news pieces about research, awards and events to longer feature stories, video projects, and occasional copy for social media posts, and determine the newsworthiness of potential stories. You will often work on a wide variety of stories at once. You may also edit the stories of other writers, so a sharp eye for accuracy, punctuation, grammar, and style is helpful.

We are looking for someone who is curious and proactive, who likes to ask questions and dig into things they don't understand, and who is passionate about telling stories driven by people, ideas, and discoveries. We look forward to seeing your application.

Responsibilities:

Produces content in support of the goals, mission, and vision of the designated work unit.
  • 60% Authors a range of materials for use by internal and/or external audiences
  • 20% Consults with internal and/or external stakeholders to ensure accuracy
  • 15% Obtains source approval of content and meets publication deadlines
  • 5% Creates and implements communication campaigns that align with work unit or program strategies
