Job Description:

SUNY Empire State College is currently seeking a full-time Specialist for Academic Support (State Title: Staff Assistant) to provide online and onsite learning assistance and coaching to students in writing, reading strategies, research skills, time management, study skills, etc.  

In addition, this candidate will assist Academic Support leadership with developing, managing and delivering academic support services and programs, including live workshops, asynchronous resources, event programming and working with faculty to provide embedded academic support within courses.

The successful candidate will work collaboratively with a statewide academic support team, value a student-centered approach to supporting learning and be willing to partner with faculty on learning activity design and support.  Specific experience supporting a diverse student body in a non-traditional learning environment Is strongly desired.

Requirements:

Required Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in a related field from a regionally accredited U.S. university or comparable non-U.S. university
  • Experience providing academic support in writing and study skills to post-traditional/adult students at the college level
  • Experience teaching and/or providing support in an online platform
  • Excellent writing and academic skills and effective communication and organizational skills
  • Experience with Office 365 programs and web-based communications platforms

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Desire and skills to engage with a diverse student body
  • Experience providing academic support to English language learners/multi-lingual students at the college level; degree or certificate in TESOL or Applied Linguistics/Second Language Acquisition
  • Experience providing academic support to students with disabilities
  • Experience teaching college writing
  • Knowledge of adult learning, learning technologies and online pedagogies
  • Ability to work within a collaborative academic environment; experience developing relationships and collaborating with faculty
  • Experience coordinating and planning programs or services in a higher ed environment

Special Information:

  • This position is located in Manhattan, NY at 4 Park Ave.
  • Some late afternoon and early evening hours are required; delivery of services to students is primarily in late afternoon and evening; weekend hours are desirable.  Some hours may be remote depending on student needs.
  • Occasional travel may be required to fulfill department, division, and college-wide commitments.
  • VISA sponsorship is not available for this position.

Additional Information:

Rank/Salary: SL2/$50,000+ dependent upon experience and qualifications.
