Under general supervision to communicate to both internal and external audiences the updates and advancement happening on the campus of Texas Southern University. Through various avenues of communication, it is my duty to share news as it happens and keep all of TSU’s audiences informed. Essential Duties Summary
  • Develops and implements strategies to maximize TSU’s social media channels and other platforms.
  • Plans, writes, edits, assists with production and distribution of news stories, press releases, statements, fact sheets, bulletins, and other promotional pieces that promote the goals and mission of the university.
  • Keeps the homepage of the website updated.
  • Meets with departments and entities around campus to assist in communications needs.
  • Creates content for InsideTSU – the weekly news blast sent to faculty, staff, students, alumni, and supporters.
  • Curates working relationships with Deans, and designated point persons, to obtain regular notification of newsworthy events, activities, and achievements at the college/school level.
  • Maintains a national media database and makes initial contacts to media to promote TSU . Responds to media inquiries and maximizes university exposure and brand awareness.
  • Participates in planning and implementation of promotional activities for social media, web site, university events, and more.
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

Bachelor’s degree (B.A. or B.S.) in Journalism, Communications, Public Relations, or related discipline. Required Licensing/Certification
None Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Knowledge of:
  • Policies, procedures, and practices.
  • APA style and be proficient in writing and editing using APA style.
  • Acts as the ultimate subject matter expert in a professional discipline or function; understood to be the “go-to” expert on complex methods and procedures. Requires the ability to lead the development or modification of work procedures in the discipline or function for virtually any situation.
  • Microsoft Office Professional or similar applications.

Skill in:
  • Detail oriented.

  • Both verbal and written communication.

Ability to:
  • Use job-related software and systems.
  • Perform internet research in order to identify media sources and provide information for written communications.

Work Experience
Two (2) to three (3) years of related experience.
Use desktop publishing or other job-related software preferred.
Shoot and edit basic video and interviews for multimedia storytelling preferred.

Working/Environmental Conditions
  • Routine office environment.
  • Sitting or standing in one location much of the time.
  • Some stooping, lifting, or carrying objects light weight may be required.
  • Use of video display terminal.
  • This position is subject to open hours.
