The focus of this position involves molecular and cellular approaches towards the understanding of the essential pathways of malaria parasites that could be targeted for developing novel antimalarial drugs.
Essential Functions
The research scientist will perform CRISPR based gene editing to study pathways involved in pH regulation and mitochondrial functions of Plasmodium falciparum malaria parasite. Studies will include the cultivation of malaria parasites, conditional knockdown (or knockout) of essential genes, and phenotypic analysis of transgenic parasites using various approaches. The research scientist will also be responsible for assisting the PI with daily management of laboratory operations.
The research scientist will assist the PI with the employment of CRISPR based molecular tools to study the essential and druggable pathways of the malaria parasite. The research scientist will maintain parasite culture, perform PCRs for genotyping, construct plasmids for parasite transfections, and analyze phenotypes of transgenic parasites using immunofluorescence microscopy, Western blot, DNA/RNA sequencing, etc.
Required Qualifications
- Master’s Degree in life science related professions or Equivalent
- 2 years of experience
