POSITION PURPOSE: The Mission of the Student Health Services is to build a healthy campus community by providing quality, caring, cost effective ambulatory healthcare and health promotion services. As part of an institution of higher learning, the Student Health Services participates in the educational process by teaching students the skills for self-care, promoting their health, advocating for themselves, and preventing diseases thus enhancing their academic productivity leading to a satisfying college experience.

Under the supervision of the Director Health Center, in addition to receiving direction from the Assistant Director for Student Health Services, using established standardized procedures and/or processes, the Nurse Practitioner (NP) will provide reproductive care and patient care which includes assessment, diagnosis, and preventative and health maintenance. The NP will provide services that are equitable, inclusive, and culturally sensitive to enhance the quality of campus life.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

Clinical Duties
  • Work and collaborate as part of an interdisciplinary health care team that includes primary care physicians, nurses, medical assistants, clinical assistants, and other support staff.
  • Collaborate and consult with physicians and other health care professionals on more complicated health problems and referrals.
  • Work primarily providing reproductive health to the college population to include:
  • Obtain a basic health history and comprehensive gynecological (GYN) history
  • Perform a general physical exam, breast exam, GYN exam, and male genitourinary exam
  • Recognize common breast and GYN deviations from normal and provide management or referral as appropriate
  • Recognize common non-GYN deviations from normal and provide management or referral as appropriate
  • Provide preventive care, including screening for breast and cervical cancers
  • Provide family planning education
  • Obtain and interpret laboratory tests and results related to GYN visits
  • Perform and interpret transvaginal and abdominal ultrasounds
  • Screen for contraindications and special conditions to contraceptive methods
  • Provide appropriate contraception to patients, including intrauterine contraceptives (IUCs) and implants
  • Placement and removal of long-acting reversible contraception and on-site delivery and prescribing of emergency contraception
  • Test and treat STDs and other infectious conditions
  • Provide PrEP and nPEP to prevent HIV infection
  • Provide medication abortion and other special services as appropriate by licensure
  • Assess and manage complications from medication abortion
  • Provide care for patients of all gender identities, including gender-affirming care
  • Construct an accurate assessment and plan based on history, exam, and lab findings
  • Provide patient with general reproductive health maintenance, education, and counseling
  • Perform complete and focused patient evaluations, including obtaining detailed medical histories and physicals, using applicable clinical techniques and diagnostic tools.
  • Provide family planning, preventive health, and health maintenance education.
  • Perform patient assessment and triage.
  • Instruct and counsel patients regarding health problems, family planning, emotional problems, acute mental health problems, preventative healthcare, and health care maintenance.
  • Perform, as privileged, other procedures after obtaining patient consent such as injections, immunizations, suturing lacerations, skin biopsies, incisions and drainage and wound care.
  • Diagnose common acute and chronic illnesses and injuries and develop treatment plans based upon a complete evaluation of a patient's medical history, physical examination, and test results as well as a patient's preferences.
  • Order, interpret, and evaluate routine lab tests and other diagnostic tests and procedures including x-ray examinations.
  • Analyze emergency situations accurately and to take prompt appropriate action including the initiation of therapeutic procedures in response to life threatening situations.
  • Establish, diagnose, and document health care plans, disposition, referrals, and prognosis in the Electronic Medical Record (EHR) using subjective, objective, assessment, and plan (SOAP) format, problem lists and medication lists.
  • Document each patient encounter in a manner that will enable other providers or peer reviewing group to evaluate the effectiveness, efficiency, and appropriateness of the plan.
  • Establish and document the health care treatment plans and prognoses for patients treated and refer to outside health care provider(s) or public agencies when patients require services beyond those available in the Student Health Center.
  • Use equipment in SHS clinics and urgent care including, EKG, Spirometer, Defibrillator and Nebulizer.
  • Furnish medications to patients according to supervising physician's protocols and Board of Registered Nursing (BRN) and Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) regulations.
  • Furnish medication to patients; educate patients regarding medication instructions, potential side effects and adverse reactions and the risks of noncompliance with the therapeutic regimen. Document this discussion in the SOAP/progress note.
  • Instruct and counsel patients regarding use of medications and seek patient and provider concordance for prescribed therapeutic regimens.
  • Closely monitor all use of controlled substances prescribed as treatment, registering, and using the California Controlled Substances Utilization Review and Evaluation System (CURES) when indicated and/or required by law.
  • Accommodate anticipated and urgent unanticipated patient needs in your daily schedule.
  • Adhere to all HIPAA & FERPA guidelines and maintain strict patient confidentiality, as required by law.
  • Works independently according to guidelines and practices described in SHS physician-approved protocols.

Non-Clinical Duties
  • Participate in quarterly peer review.
  • Participate in chart review studies.
  • Participate as a member of the QI/RM Committee.
  • Maintain compliance with established university policies, procedures, and protocols including for quality assurance, infection control, and confidentiality of protected health information.
  • Participate as requested in SHS campus outreach activities such as lunch with health professional, health fairs and presentations.
  • Participate in SHS &/or campus committees providing input and analysis as assigned.
  • Engage in professional development activities to maintain licensure, registrations, and certifications.
  • Keep current with developments in nurse practitioner and medical fields applicable to the population served within the student health center.
  • Coordinate and/or teach health professional students upon agreement of the employee and supervisor if operational needs are met.
  • Provide emergency care during a disaster involving the campus.
  • Participate in other duties as deemed appropriate by Director or Associate Director.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE –
  • A minimum of three (3) years of progressively responsible professional nurse practitioner experience with demonstrated capability to carry out the responsibilities of the position.
  • Academic degree or certificate from an approved college or university-based Nurse Practitioner program or equivalent training and experience as outlined by the California Board of Registered Nursing (BRN). Incumbents must be clinically competent in a medical specialty applicable to their position and possess sufficient experience to independently perform the duties of a Nurse Practitioner within that specialty.

LICENSES, CERTIFICATES, CREDENTIALS:
  • Possession of a valid driver's license or the ability to obtain by date of hire.
  • Possess and maintain a valid California license as a Registered Nurse and a BRN certificate evidencing that the individual is qualified to use the title of Nurse Practitioner, as required by the California Board of Registered Nursing.
  • Possess and maintain a valid BRN Furnishing Certificate.
  • Possess and maintain a valid DEA number and certificate.

SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE & ABILITIES (SKA's) –
  • Regular and reliable attendance is required.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of advanced nursing and primary care principles, methods, and procedures.
  • Thorough knowledge of medical theories, practices, and protocols relative to the scope of practice, subject areas such as growth and development, pathophysiology, psychosocial assessment, pharmacology, nutrition, disease management, and the principles of health maintenance, applicable state and federal laws and regulations pertaining to practice as a Nurse Practitioner.
  • Possesses the abilities and clinical competence required to work as a Nurse Practitioner including, but not limited to, the ability to work independently in assigned areas of practice established by the supervising physician.
  • Demonstrated clinical competence in eliciting patient histories, conducting examinations, diagnosing, and treating acute and chronic illnesses and injuries, assessing patient needs and making appropriate referrals.
  • Ability to use clinical techniques and diagnostic tools and interpret laboratory and other test results.
  • Ability to keep current with developments in the medical field pertinent to the incumbent's scope of practice.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Five (5) years of experience in reproductive health care.
  • Direct patient care experience, preferably in women's health/reproductive and/or prenatal health care. Experience in reproductive health, OB/GYN, primary care, or community health care preferred.
  • Demonstrated skills in an institutional/educational environment.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: LIGHT WORK – involves mainly sitting, up to 25% standing or walking; lifting medium weight objects limited to 25 pounds.
