Summary:
The College of Lake County is looking for a PT, Backstage Technician to join the James Lumber Center for the Performing Arts (JLC). The JLC Backstage Technician is primarily responsible for performing designated tasks assigned by the JLC Technical Coordinator or assigned supervisor when preparing for, working during and/or striking after a performance in the JLC.

Required Qualifications:
  1. High School diploma or equivalent.
  2. Minimum two (2) years in backstage support of professional performance events.
  3. Ability to squat, bend and lift 50+ lbs. frequently.
  4. Experience and knowledge in using basic hand and power tools such as c-wrenches, socket wrenches and power drills.
  5. Working skill in operating a personal computer, applicable software and peripheral equipment as well as learning and adapting to new and updated programs and software.
  6. Working skill in written and verbal communication.
  7. Strong skill in organizing work to meet established deadlines while maintaining attention to detail.
  8. Proven ability to work effectively and constructively with persons of diverse cultures, language groups, and abilities; demonstrate sensitivity to and ability to work with the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, faculty, and staff, including those with disabilities; establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
  9. Ability to work a flexible schedule which may include days/evening/weekends as needed by the department.
  10. Adheres to College guidelines for attendance and punctuality.


Desired Qualifications:
  1. Daytime M-F availability a plus.
  2. Good knowledge of technical production and performance aspects of theater, music, and dance.

Total Hours Per Week: Up to 25 hours per week (hours may vary in accordance to the needs of the JLC Production Schedule)).

Summary of Essential Functions:
  1. Load-in and Load-out activities of contracted touring, College Music and Dance Department, and College business events and external/community rentals. Some heavy lifting is required.
  2. Perform basic theatrical rigging and fly rail operations.
  3. Setup, hang, focus, tear down of stage lighting fixtures, and operation of computerized lighting consoles.
  4. Setup and tear down of audio equipment, and operation of analogue and computerized audio control systems
  5. Setup of stage risers, orchestra shell, music stands, chairs and temporary installation of dance flooring.
  6. Work as a general stagehand for all performances, as needed.
  7. Serve as operator for lighting console, audio console and follow spotlights for performances
  8. Occasionally work at heights (catwalks, loading bridge, lifts/ladders, etc.)
  9. Operation of theatrical equipment in a safe and efficient manner as dictated by safety and training guidelines for the department and College
  10. Other related duties as assigned.
