Job Details

Wofford College invites applications for a tenure-track assistant professor of teacher education to begin in August 2023. At Wofford, faculty serve as teacher-scholars dedicated to the education and mentorship of undergraduates in a liberal arts tradition. Wofford embraces a broad definition of scholarship that includes discipline-specific, pedagogical and interdisciplinary research. Faculty earn tenure after six years by demonstrating excellence in teaching, continued scholarly development and service to the college.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Applicants will have:

  • An Ed.D. or Ph.D. in an education discipline by the time of appointment. Evidence of classroom teaching, which may include undergraduate instruction and/or student teaching/teaching in K-12 schools.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Where applicable, applicants should speak to the preferred qualifications:

  • Evidence of classroom teaching in K-12 public and/or private schools.
  • Willingness to partner with local public and/or private schools.
  • Demonstrated experience in mentoring and/or advising in an educational setting.
  • Commitment to inclusive pedagogy and experience engaging with K-12 students from underrepresented backgrounds.
  • Evidence of past scholarship and a plan for future scholarship.
  • Training in the evaluation of teachers and/or experience working with state educator certification requirements and supervision of students in clinical experiences.
  • Expertise in academic area(s) that will complement Wofford College’s Department of Education.
  • Interest and/or experience in collaborating within a small department. Commitment to teach at a small, liberal arts college. Leadership experience in educational settings.
  • Qualified to teach current education courses (Foundations of Education, Foundations of Literacy, Teaching Diverse Student Populations, Teaching of Reading, Human Growth and Development, and Educational Psychology).
  • Ability to develop courses based on current educational trends.

EXPECTATIONS

Wofford faculty members are primarily educators committed to developing and practicing effective student-centered pedagogies to facilitate our students’ academic development. We seek applicants qualified to teach courses in our minor, which are listed under preferred qualifications. In addition, candidates will need to demonstrate the ability to develop courses to complement the education minor based on current educational trends. For humanities and social science faculty, a standard teaching load is 3-1-3.

Education faculty also supervise students in K-12 schools during Interim and other regular semester courses that include field experiences. Thus, the position requires a willingness to partner with local public and/or private schools, or experience within. The Department of Education has recently partnered with a local “public school of innovation,” so the candidate should be willing to support this partnership and any others that may develop in the future. In the current world of education, K-12 schools and teacher preparation programs are evolving to meet the demand of future teacher shortages; therefore, the successful candidate must have an interest in creating and/or supporting innovative educational approaches to address these needs.

We seek candidates with training in the evaluation of teachers and/or experience working with state educator certification requirements and supervision of students in clinical experiences. The candidate will also need to demonstrate experience in mentoring and/or advising in an educational setting. Commitment to inclusive pedagogy and experience engaging with K-12 students from underrepresented backgrounds is valued as well.

APPLICATION

Application materials should be submitted electronically to EducationDepartmentSearch@wofford.edu as a single PDF. Application materials should include: 1) a cover letter explaining your interest and suitability for this position, 2) curriculum vitae including research, 3) unofficial graduate transcripts, 4) names and contact information for three references, and 5) a statement of your teaching philosophy, which should include a genuine interest in working with departmental and campus efforts to develop a diverse and inclusive environment.

Applications received by Jan. 2, 2023 will be given full consideration. Questions about the position or search should be directed to committee chair Christie B. Johnson (johnsoncb@wofford.edu).
