The Division of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DDEI) at SUNY Potsdam is accepting on-line applications for a Native American Program Coordinator (Staff Assistant). A primary focus of this position will be on programming initiatives designed to increase the recruitment, retention, and academic, social success and graduation rate of Indigenous students. This includes maintaining close working relationships with Native communities across the State, particularly Akwesasne Mohawks. Duties include, but are not limited to: working in collaboration with the Student Success Center, academic departments, and other support services to support access, retention, and academic success of SUNY Potsdam’s Indigenous students; assist the Modern Language Department with Mohawk language course offerings; plan, organize and evaluate initiatives/activities that improve Indigenous students’ academic and social success; advise, mentor, and assist students on a variety of academic, social, and cultural issues and provide opportunity for cultural identity among the students; promote/offer resources and educational opportunities for the campus community to promote a climate of cultural awareness and inclusion; assist the DDEI in providing the necessary support to retain the students; collaborate with the Center for Diversity (CFD) and other campus departments on programming, which reflects the goals of the Division as well as support students’ intersecting identities; work with other campus units and external organizations to provide services and programs that promote and expand inclusive excellence; collaborate with academic and administrative departments to increase understanding of the unique issues, trends and needs of Indigenous students; organize targeted and campus-wide cultural activities to foster a better understanding of the culture of Indigenous people; serve as a resource and guide for Indigenous students who are having a difficult time adjusting to life on campus and in the North Country; support students in fostering a better understanding and appreciation of diversity and inclusion through events/workshops/conferences/forums; work closely with the First Nation Student Association and other CFD clubs; and serve on college committees. This work requires some evening, weekend, and periodic travel. Required qualifications include a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university is required. The successful applicant must be able to work collaboratively with various campus constituents, possess facilitation and programming skills/experience, and must demonstrate a commitment to assist in building and sustaining a respectful, welcoming, inclusive, and supportive campus environment for underrepresented students and especially our Indigenous students. Preferred qualifications include professional experience working with Indigenous students. Master’s degree in education, Counseling Psychology, Higher Education Administration, or related field, and at least three years’ experience.
