    POSITION PURPOSE: Under the administrative direction of the Assistant Vice President for Student Affairs & Student Services, the Director of Special Programs & Student Retention Initiatives is responsible for providing leadership and direct assistance for student retention-based initiatives, programs supporting CSU Graduation Initiative 2025, and student success-related areas in the CSUB Strategic Plan. Emphasis will be placed on closing equity gaps for underrepresented minority (URM) and Pell-eligible students.

    The Director is responsible for providing leadership, direction, and management of programs and services designed to enhance student success. These include student-facing programs and services that support the recruitment, retention, and graduation of URM and Pell-eligible students. The incumbent must be a passionate advocate for student success and have a clear understanding of student development, principles of individual and group behavior, knowledge of and sensitivity to issues related to URM, historically low-income, and first-generation students, a working knowledge of the methods and problems of organization and program management, and a working knowledge of University structure, programs, and services.

    DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

    Program Leadership
    • Coordinate programming for URM and Pell-eligible students to promote persistence, retention, sense of belonging, and graduation, while serving as a passionate advocate for student success.
    • Maintain currency on issues and best practices impacting URM and Pell-eligible students.
    • Establish working relationships with internal and external stakeholders to support the recruitment and retention needs of URM and Pell-eligible students.
    • Give presentations to internal and external audiences on topics related to student success and issues impacting Underrepresented Minority (URM), 1st-generation, and Pell-eligible students
    • Work with key stakeholders, K-12, community colleges and four-year colleges to create a consortium designed to address the issues men of color face throughout the educational pipeline and improve retention and graduation rates.
    • Manage the strategic direction, financial resources, and daily operations of Excel Scholars, a recruitment and retention program that supports undergraduate URM males.
    • Provide training for personnel, mentors, student assistants, and program volunteers.
    • Assist in writing grants to secure external funding.
    • Coordinate the creation, planning, and implementation of workshops and seminars.
    • Design and administer a comprehensive assessment plan.
    • Identify, evaluate, and propose solutions to relevant areas that need special attention.
    • Serve on committees as assigned by the Assistant Vice President for Student Success.
    • Coordinate special events and projects as requested.
    • Represent the University on various systemwide, internal and external committees, initiatives, and task forces.

    Student Support
    • Monitor student progress and provide reports as needed.
    • Assess student needs and make data-informed decisions.
    • Refer students to appropriate resources as necessary.

    REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

    EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE – Bachelor's degree from an accredited university in higher education or related field and a minimum of five (5) years of professional experience in student success, student development or related area. A doctorate degree and the appropriate internship or clinical training may be substituted for two (2) years of experience.

    • Excellent communication skills: ability to effectively communicate information in a clear and understandable manner, both verbally and in writing.

    • Excellent computer skills and competence with a variety of computer applications including word-processing, spreadsheets, databases, on-line systems, Internet as well as online calendaring and email.
    • Working knowledge of or ability to quickly learn University infrastructure.
    • Possesses a customer-oriented and service-centered attitude.
    • Must be willing to travel and attend training programs off-site for occasional professional development.
    • Must be able to work occasional holidays and adjust working hours to meet special jobs. May be called back periodically to perform work as needed on an emergency basis.

    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
    • Master's degree from an accredited university and a minimum of three (3) years of related experience.
    • Demonstrated skills in an institutional/educational environment.
    • Demonstrated professional level experience working in a retention capacity serving URM, historically low-income, and first-generation college students.
    • Knowledge of campus and community resources for URM and Pell-eligible students.
    • Knowledge of academic, social, and emotional challenges often faced by first-generation and Pell-eligible students from diverse backgrounds.

    PHYSICAL DEMANDS: LIGHT WORK – involves mainly sitting, up to 25% standing or walking; lifting medium weight objects limited to 25 pounds.

    SPECIAL CONDITIONS:
