Vice President Data and Insights



Position Summary

The Vice President, Data Operations and Insights is a key technology strategy, engineering, and leadership role responsible for data, data operations, data intelligence, data reporting, data democratization of data, data integration, and data architecture at NU. An experienced and credible data strategist, technologist, and senior leader with an accomplished data transformation track record, reporting to the Chief Digital and Data Officer.

This leader will be responsible for developing, communicating, and delivering a transformative data capability to improve student enrollment, education, and placement and to support the Universities mission and strategic plans for continuous improvement and growth. The VP of Data works closely with the Executive team and other leaders at the University to uncover impactful insights and ensure we grow more data-driven by the day. Ultimately, they will set the vision for how we evolve our use of data with strategic decision making at the intersection of talent and technology

Essential Functions
  • Be an active and strategic voice, driving our core data vision forward
  • Define and drive our data strategy
  • Creates Business Intelligence roadmap and goals, including but not limited to implementation and maintenance of data governance, data lake strategy, data warehousing strategy (data lakehouse), data science practices, align/report data insights, coordinating with leaders to ensure data integrity and data utilization, resource allocation, development and implementation of departmental vision and strategy, and delivering on roadmap goals
  • Partners with leadership to prioritize areas of opportunity to drive growth and provide insights on the impact of strategic initiatives on the key metrics
  • Lead, manage, mentor and growth the data department to successful outcomes
  • Build and develop Data Governance solutions for overall management of availability, usability, integrity, and security of the enterprise data
  • Leads complex analytical initiatives, developing tracking, combining data from multiple sources to extract meaning, reconcile assumptions, and identify logical path for action
  • Democratize data by building and socializing decision tools (dashboards, reports); build key data sets/pipelines to empower operational and exploratory analysis
  • Ensures data is reliable, consistent, accessible, secure, and timely to support our mission and operating cadence
  • Helps design, research, and develop new statistical tools/programs/products to meet business needs
  • Create and lead the new stage of our ambitious Data and Analytics strategy
  • Creating and lead the analytics community, enabling other business functions to maximize the effectiveness of data
  • Leads teams focused data development, data architecture, data science, data reporting and data governance
Supervisory Responsi bilities : Yes- including supervision of Sr Director and Directors

Requirements:

Education and Experience
  • Master’s or Ph.D. in related field
  • 5+ years executive level management experience
  • 10+ years of relevant data analytics, engineer, governance
  • Expertise in query design, generation, and reporting; SQL and SSRS preferred
  • Experience in Business Intelligence Dashboards and actionable analytics design.
  • A deep technical background in analytics, applied data science, and reporting spanning some or all of: analytics, statistics, experimentation, modeling, optimization techniques, data engineering & architecture, and behavioral analytics.
  • Skilled at operating in a complex, cross-functional organization, or company where your teams need to collaborate and integrate with other teams across many disciplines
  • Experience in higher education preferred
  • Experience working in a technology-driven enterprise preferred
  • All skills, abilities and education will be considered for minimum qualifications

  • Experience in Business Intelligence Dashboards and actionable analytics design.
  • An inspiring leader – managing and mentoring a team of data and analytics experts. With a demonstrable track record of leading similar functions
  • Highly capable leader with the ability to establish clear strategy that can inspire others to deliver and influence to drive change across the organization.
  • Demonstrate the ability to communicate effectively and influence global cross functional teams or work with stakeholders
  • Be highly organized, commercially aware, analytical, results-oriented, committed, agile and audacious
  • Have a strong ability to story tell with data: designing, implementing data models, and communicating in easily digestible formats. Facilitating data analysis initiatives, from problem identification and evaluation through user engagement, ensuring insights shape the design of products and experiences.
