EMS Clinical Coordinator and Principal Instructor



Position Summary

With strategic leadership, facilitate the programmatic principles related to Emergency Medical Services (EMS) programs such as EMT ad EMS Continuing Education Programs within the assigned location. Serve as the EMT Clinical Program Coordinator, as well as the Principal Instructor for the EMT Program. Instruct EMT classes ensuring organization and leadership of educational programs. Collaborate with EMS Program Director, to sustain a high-quality curriculum. Meet industry standards, including compliance needs with local, state, and national entities for assigned territory EMS Programs, as well as, ensuring the quality of the medical content classes regarding current and compliant standards. Ensure seamless student placement at clinical sites, as well as sustains comprehensive knowledge of the programs’, state, and county requirements. Provide leadership and management of EMT staff and students concerning the quality of the curriculum developed and offered.

Essential Functions:
  • Ensure EMS training programs are consistent in compliance with CAAHEP/CoAEMSP, State EMS Regulations (Chapter 22), LEMSA San Diego County) and other related laws, including quality medical content of the EMT Program.
  • Approves teaching assistants for the EMT Program, including field, hospital clinical preceptors, clinical and internship assignments and facilitates the development of curriculum, including instructional objectives, as well as assessments techniques and methodologies.
  • Serve as the EMT Clinical Coordinator, as outlined in Title 22; and ensuring student clinical placements and collaborate with staff on job placements.
  • Establishes, develops, and sustains an adequate number of clinical education sites relative to quality, quantity, and diversity of learning experiences to meet the educational needs of students and program objective, philosophy, outcomes, and evaluative criteria.
  • Conducts continuous quality review and improvement of the educational program, as well as long range planning and ongoing development.
  • Ensures the success of the EMT Program, including instruction, and faculty; contributes to the outreach efforts resulting in lead generation for the EMS program.
  • Conducts orientations, training, and supervision of EMT instructors.
  • Ensures compliance of EMS programs with the Department of Education, accrediting agencies, bureau, and board. Creates outcomes and learning competencies to ensure delivery of the educational programs. Scrutinizes academic program requirements, industry updates and student learning. Establishes goals and an implementation plan for EMS programs and courses. Conducts quality reviews and program enhancement for student retention.
  • Advocates curriculum in accordance with NUS policy and applicable state standards. Approves all written examinations and final skills examination. Evaluates students’ progress in attaining program knowledge and skills. Contributes to the curriculum and program reviews. Prepares course, grades and required documentation, as well as administrative reports. Ensures compliance with safety and security measures during periods of instructions.
  • Sustains subject matter expertise with industry requirements, as well as University policies, procedures, and practices.
  • Scrutinizes and evaluates key measurements and ensures the highest degree of quality of the EMS training programs and in compliance with California Code of Regulations and state law.
  • Leads and observes Staff Instructor performance and learning outcomes. Meets with Staff Instructors for program development and performance feedback.
  • Plans and participates in enrollment enhancement activities when practical including, but not limited to community outreach and high school events/classes.
  • Represent the School of Health Professions with professionalism when interacting with internal and external stakeholders. Participate on committees, special project teams and advisory groups as assigned.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Supervisory Responsi bilities : Train and develop up to 25 Part-time instructors as part of mentorship program for San Diego and Fresno locations.

Requirements:

Education & Experience:
  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field, preferred and, ten (10) years in a clinical setting, emergency medical services or Prehospital care or an equivalent combination of education and experience, to include:
    • One (1) year of supervisory experience in an EMS System, preferred; and,
    • Three (3) years of academic or clinical experience in emergency medicine or pre-hospital care within the last five (5) years; and,
    • Three (3) years of field experience in the delivery of out-of-hospital emergency care; and,
    • Two (2) years of full-time teaching experience for an EMS program; and,
  • Current Licensed Paramedic in the State of California; and,
  • Documented 40 hours in teaching methodology as defined by the DOT/NHTSA National Guidelines for Educating EMS Instructors and the National EMS Education Standards (NAEMSE – Level 1); and,
  • Instructor status required in the following disciplines: BLS, Healthcare provider; Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS); Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS); and Pre-Hospital Trauma Life Support
  • Experience in mentoring, student centered learning, lesson plan development, program evaluation, social intelligence, research, presentation technologies, leadership, and administrative Issues defined by the National Association of EMS Educators (NAEMSE Level II Certification) preferred.

  • Comprehensive knowledge and familiarity of the California emergency medical system protocols. Must sustain currency in the EMS field of study pertaining to EMT.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to successfully communicate with a wide range of individual of constituencies in a diverse community making a positive impression in public forums, including faculty, students, and staff. Ability to communicate competently orally and in writing along with excellent presentation skills.
  • Solid understanding, knowledge, and familiarity of the California Emergency Medical System protocols, including high-standard expertise in EMS clinical skills and teaching methodologies gained through professional development. Good organization, attention to detail, work with multiple projects simultaneously as well as good follow-up and follow-through.
  • Knowledge of course content of the United States Department of Transportation (U.S.DOT) National Emergency Medical Services Education Standards DOT HS 811 077A, January 2009.
  • Sustains high standard of competency in EMS clinical skills and teaching methodologies through professional development. Solid knowledge and understanding of adult learning principles and instructional methods.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously, excellent organizational skills with attention to details, good follow-up and follow-through.
  • Intermediate use of computers and Microsoft Office Suite Applications such as Word, Excel, Power Point, Outlook.
  • Work independently and foster a cooperative spirit within a large and/or small team of diverse cultures across the organization and all levels while working in a fast-paced environment with multiple deadlines and frequently changing priorities.
  • Ability to mediate and resolve conflict, demonstrated interviewing skills, ability to handle multiple tasks in a demanding environment, high sense of ethics, action oriented and ability to make decisions; Strong interpersonal, oral, and written communication abilities.
Travel : Up to 10% travel to EMT education sites in San Diego and Fresno County.
