    POSITION PURPOSE: The CSUB University Police Department is dedicated to ensuring the safest possible environment for our students, faculty, staff, and visitors. The University Police Department is a full-service law enforcement agency that is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The University Police Department investigates crimes that occur on campus and assists other local law enforcement agencies.

    Under general supervision of the Assistant Vice President and Chief of Police, the Parking Officer performs standard duties related to patrolling campus buildings, facilities, and parking lots; enforcing established rules and regulations by taking the appropriate actions; and performing related community support functions. Incumbent may provide support to police communications and records functions under supervision.

    DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

    A. Parking Regulation Enforcement
    • Patrol campus parking lots independently via foot, bike, and/or vehicle to enforce parking rules and regulations.
    • Issue citations for parking and other standing violations as appropriate.
    • Appear in court for parking-related citations.

    B. Parking Lot Security Checks
    • Patrol campus parking lots via foot, bike, and/or vehicle to protect campus community and visitors from hazards such as fire, theft, vandalism, trespassing, and other crimes.

    C. Direct Traffic
    • Provide traffic and pedestrian control/direction during peak hours, special events, emergencies, etc. as needed in coordination with other UPD staff.

    D. Support UPD Services
    • Provide support and assistance to campus police department by providing back-up dispatch support, managing property and evidence, maintaining records, providing training on crime prevention awareness, supporting drug identification programs, participating in emergency response teams and responding to emergency situations as needed.
    • Assist with incident/accident reports and respond to these situations as needed.

    REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

    EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE – Requires high school level reading and writing abilities usually achieved by obtaining a High School Diploma.

    LICENSES, CERTIFICATES, CREDENTIALS: Possession of a valid driver's license or the ability to obtain by date of hire.

    SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE & ABILITIES (SKA's) –
    • Regular and reliable attendance is required.
    • Working knowledge of applicable procedures and regulations related to campus security, public safety, and parking.
    • Working knowledge of alarm and radio systems.
    • Ability to detect and respond appropriately to potential hazardous or crime situations.
    • Ability to observe and recall details and incidents.
    • Ability to use good judgement and discretion to solve problems and address parking regulations based on current
    • regulations and protocols.
    • Ability to write standard incident reports in a clear and concise manner.
    • Ability to interact effectively with a wide range of individuals including the campus community, general public and law
    • enforcement personnel.
    • Ability to handle sensitive situations with tact and confidentiality
    • Demonstrated customer service experience requiring a very high level of diplomacy and professionalism.
    • Ability to use tact and diplomacy to effectively handle a broad range of high level and sensitive interpersonal situations
    • with diverse personalities, and to respond appropriately to conflicts and problems.
    • Ability to initiate, establish, and foster communication and teamwork by maintaining a positive, cooperative, productive
    • work atmosphere in the University with the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships within a diverse
    • population and with those from various cultural backgrounds.
    • Excellent communication skills; ability to effectively communicate information in a clear and understandable manner, both

    • Thorough knowledge of English grammar, spelling and punctuation.
    • Ability to interpret, communicate and apply policies and procedures.

    • Standard computer skills and competence with a variety of computer applications including word-processing,
    • spreadsheets, databases, on-line systems, Internet as well as online calendaring and email.
    • Working knowledge of or ability to quickly learn University infrastructure, policies, and procedures.

    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
    • Demonstrated skills in an institutional/educational environment.
    • Knowledge of Police radio systems and Police codes.

    PHYSICAL DEMANDS: HEAVY WORK – 50% or more of the activities involve walking, standing, squatting, kneeling or climbing; lifting heavy weight objects which may exceed 50 pounds.

    SPECIAL CONDITIONS:

    SCREENING: Only those applicants possessing experience most directly related to the immediate needs of the office will be invited to appear before a Qualifications Appraisal Board for the purpose of appraising training, experience, and interest in the position.

    BACKGROUND CHECK: Satisfactory completion of a background check (including a criminal records check) is required for employment.     MANDATED REPORTER: General: The person holding this position is considered a general mandated reporter under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and is required to comply with the requirements set forth in CSU Executive Order 1083, revised July 21, 2017.
