The Department of Music at California State University, Dominguez Hills (CSUDH) invites applications for a Tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor (Academic Year) with the appointment starting in Fall 2023.

Department of Music

The Department of Music at California State University Dominguez Hills offers a B.A. in Music with options in Performance, Music Liberal Arts, and Music Education. A Bachelor of Music degree with options in Vocal Performance, Instrumental Performance, Contemporary Performance, and Conducting is currently going through the curriculum process. We have approximately 100 majors, seven full-time faculty, and 17 part-time faculty.

The Position

This is a new and exciting opportunity for an innovative developer of programs who enjoys working with a diverse student body while also building an outstanding musical enterprise focused on the African musical diaspora.

As a faculty member in the Department of Music, the successful candidate will be an active member of the department in terms of teaching, research or creative activities, and service, and contribute to a collegial work environment. Evaluation for reappointment, tenure, and promotion (RTP) is through the Department of Music.

As Director for the Center for African Diaspora Sacred Music and Musicians (CADSMM) the successful candidate will advance the mission of the CADSMM:

the general study of the life and work of African Diaspora musicians in the field of sacred music, with initial focus upon the musicians of Southern California;

the special study of the evolution of the Spiritual within the African Diaspora musical repertoire of Southern California; and

the collection, preservation and performance of this music, to be housed in the Georgia & Nolan Payton Archive of Sacred Music.

The successful candidate will report to the Dean of the College of Arts and Humanities in the role of the Director of CADSMM.

The successful candidate will also be expected to teach courses that support the CADSMM curriculum, as well as promote innovation of the CADSMM mission into the 21st Century. The Center will build on the existing strengths of the Department of Music, the University Archives, and the Africana Studies Department, supporting cross-unit collaboration. The Center director will serve as an ex-officio member of the CADSMM Advisory Committee.

Responsibilities

As a faculty member in the Department of Music:

• Teach a course that supports the CADSMM curriculum.
• Develop new CADSMM curriculum.
• Produce research, scholarly and creative activities in Music, choir performances, etc., that lead to conference presentations and publications.
• Advise and mentor music students.
• Serve on department, college, and university committees.
• Participate in service to the department, college, university, and community.

As Director of the Center for African Diaspora Sacred Music and Musicians (CADSMM):

• Partner with the Gerth Archives & Special Collections to acquire and preserve archival materials related to the mission of CADSMM.
• Coordinate financial support for critical archival tasks such as cataloguing (e.g., creation of finding aids) and digitization of materials through grant and philanthropic activities.
• Coordinate commissions and performances of new choral works within the mission of CADSMM.
• Seek travel grant funding for students and visiting scholars to utilize CADSMM archival materials.
• Continue development and support for a robust website with resources for scholars, community members, and choral groups, including links to materials in the University Archives.
• Submit applications and proposals for external grants and contracts.
• Engage in additional activities that directly or indirectly support the scholarship, performance, and the mission of CADSMM including, but not limited to, collecting oral histories, student scholarships, supporting a scholarly journal, newsletters, lectures, podcasts, films and videos, equipment purchases, and community engagement.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications

Doctorate in musicology, ethnomusicology, or a related field is required before start date.

Demonstrated knowledge of the African musical diaspora.

Applicants must have demonstrated experience in teaching undergraduates from diverse age, socioeconomic, cultural, and academic backgrounds.

Preferred Qualifications

• Demonstrated scholarship related to the mission of CADSMM.
• Demonstrated experience collaborating with individuals and/or groups for effective outcomes.
• Demonstrated ability to manage projects according to expected outcomes and deadlines.

• Demonstrated ability to seek and acquire external funding for the Center's mission.
• Ability to oversee the Center's budget.
• Experience directing a music-related program or center.

Employment Requirement

Background Check

Satisfactory completion of a background check (including a criminal records check) is required for employment. CSU will make a conditional offer of employment, which may be rescinded if the background check reveals disqualifying information, and/or it is discovered that the candidate knowingly withheld or falsified information. Failure to satisfactorily complete the background check may affect the continued employment of a current CSU employee who was conditionally offered the position.

Additional Information

The Assistant Professor (Academic Year) classification salary range is $5,405 to $11,994 per month (12 monthly payments per academic year); salary for this position will be commensurate with experience and current CSUDH faculty salaries in the academic department/discipline. Faculty salaries are subject to budgetary authorization and any California State University System faculty contract increases. Summer research grants, moving expenses, start‐up funds, and a reduced teaching load may be available.
