Position Summary:
Willamette University invites applications for a non-tenure track full-time position in the newly redesigned American Studies Program. The American Studies Program seeks a highly motivated educator to provide customized content area instruction to undergraduate international students participating in a study abroad program that is organized in partnership with Willamette University and Tokyo International University.

POSITION DESCRIPTION:

The American Studies Program (ASP) consists of a tailored designed curriculum of cross-cultural topics and issues as they relate to the United States. Courses include interdisciplinary subjects from a cultural perspective on American society, media, leadership, business, and environmental studies. We expect the successful candidate to have demonstrated success in an English as a second language (ESL) learning environment for adults with the ability to teach across all content areas and language skills. The expected teaching responsibilities of the appointee will be preparing course plans and materials, developing class syllabi, delivering courses, and monitoring student progress through the utilization of highly effective ESL pedagogical strategies and methods. In addition, the appointee will collaborate with domestic and international stakeholders as well as contribute to relevant program development and innovations to enrich our students' study abroad experience. Preferred candidates should have an ongoing commitment to excellence in teaching and professional development. The American Studies Program will launch its new program in January 2023. The initial appointment will be for the Spring 2023 semester, with the possibility of renewal for the academic year 2023-2024 as an additional one-year appointment based on need and performance.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

• A master's degree in English as a Second Language, applied linguistics, bilingual education, international education, second language acquisition, or other related fields.
  
• Have international experience of studying or working abroad.
  
• Demonstrate successful college level or adult education teaching experience appropriate to our needs and program.
  
• Have a working knowledge and practical experience of best practices and standards related to the fields of English as a second or foreign language or cross-cultural education.
  
• Able to effectively communicate with interpersonal and intercultural skills using tact, patience, courtesy, and diplomacy to students from diverse academic and cultural backgrounds.
  
• Ability to develop, prepare, and teach undergraduate coursework in subject matters pertaining to the United States.
  
• Ability to work independently and collaboratively with other faculty members and offices across campus to ensure students have successful linguistic and academic experiences abroad.
  
• Demonstrate ongoing professional development and commitment to the field.
  
• Must be able to reside in Oregon. This is an in-person teaching position.
