Position Summary:
The Department of Writing, within the Community and Technical College at the University of Alaska Anchorage (UAA), invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track assistant professor to teach writing courses in a vibrant interdisciplinary academic community that serves students from a wide array of cultural and linguistic backgrounds. We respond to the lifelong learning needs of students by providing writing instruction for dual enrollment, military personnel, immigrants, and returning students, with special attention to non-traditional, at-risk, and English language learners. Our writing courses serve the general education mission of our campus by developing critical capacities like reading, writing, and critical thinking, while maintaining a commitment to social and linguistic justice. Writing courses offered range from developmental to discipline-specific, including sections designated for academic Honors.

Duties:
Teaching: This tenure-track position carries a full-time instructional workload within a vibrant interdisciplinary academic community that serves a racially and ethnically diverse student body, including Alaska Native/Indigenous students. The successful candidate will teach four undergraduate writing courses each semester, with course release opportunities available for research or community engagement projects. Courses may include, but are not limited to, developmental reading and writing, introductory general education writing, writing courses within a vertical curriculum that branches into disciplines (humanities, sciences, professions), and topic courses that contribute to an occupational certificate in professional writing. Service: Faculty are expected to engage in meaningful service at the department, college, and/or university level, depending on their interests and career goals (e.g. assessment, curriculum development and review, student success initiatives, shared governance, community-engaged projects). Service assignments will be explored in consultation with the Department Chair and approved by the College Dean.Essential
The University of Alaska Anchorage (UAA), situated in the state's largest city, recognizes and values the diversity of our unique location in Southcentral Alaska, the ancestral homelands of the Dena'ina Athabascan, Ahtna Athabascan, Alutiiq/Sugpiak and Eyak peoples.

We are seeking a colleague with the knowledge and skills to engage with UAA's unique cultural environment. Campus diversity flows from the wellspring of Pacific Rim cultures, and the successful candidate will interact daily with students from Alaska Native, East Asian, and Pacific Island backgrounds and will need to provide compassionate support for each of these groups.

The successful candidate will join a department whose primary focus is writing instruction and whose faculty come to the work from a variety of backgrounds (creative writing, composition and rhetoric, humanities, and literature).

Our department is centered on student success and strives to build trust with a diverse, non-traditional student population through compassionate instruction that builds a bridge to students' life goals. We are looking for a colleague who loves working with first and second year students and who strives to give them a sense of agency as meaning-makers and knowledge-creators.

The University and the Department recognize the value of faculty with diverse lived experience as a way to strengthen writing pedagogy and intercultural fluency on our campus. We are therefore actively seeking candidates who identify as members of groups underrepresented in higher education (for example, Alaska Native/Indigenous, Queer/Trans, first-generation academic, etc.).

We honor diverse experiences and perspectives—including differences in ideas, religion, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, ethnicity, race, culture, nationality, age, disability, veteran and socioeconomic status—and strive to create welcoming and inclusive learning environments where all are treated with respect.

With an enrollment of approximately 15,500 students across 5 campuses, UAA offers certificates, associates, bachelors, masters and a limited number of doctoral programs in 5 academic colleges.

The area's public schools enroll students whose families speak over 100 different languages, making it one of the most diverse school districts in the United States.

This is not a remote position but does accommodate a flexible schedule, with options to teach day, evening, in-person, hybrid, and online classes.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
Experience teaching developmental and/or Accelerated Learning Program writing courses that include English language learners.

Experience with and proven commitment to Alaska Native/Indigenous, place-based, culturally inclusive, anti-racist, and/or trauma-informed pedagogies that value language varieties.

Experience with innovative student-centered teaching practices (may include but is not limited to community engagement, service learning, multimodal assignments, etc.).

Knowledge of or experience working with institutional initiatives (for example, student success, writing centers, programmatic assessment, dual enrollment, writing across the curriculum/in the disciplines, etc.).

Experience working in a collaborative environment to achieve common goals.

Typical Experience:
Experience teaching college writing to first-year, dual-enrolled, English language learners, and/or underrepresented student populations (e.g. non-traditional, first-generation, 1.5 generation, veterans, learning-disabled, immigrant, multilingual).

Experience with the language practices or lived experiences of linguistically/racially/ethnically marginalized communities (evidence may include coursework, teaching, scholarship, creative work, and/or life experience).

Required Education or Training:
Terminal degree (PhD or MFA) in English, Composition and Rhetoric, Creative Writing, or other discipline related to the teaching of writing, or ABD with degree by hire date.

Salary Information:

This is a full-time, 9-month, tenure track faculty position complete with both a competitive salary (DOE) and full employee benefits package with an expected start date in August 2023.

Special Instructions to Applicants:

Please be prepared to upload the following items:
A cover letter that addresses your interest in and qualifications for the position. Curriculum vitae listing all education, previous teaching experience, and relevant details of an academic faculty work history. Transcripts of all undergraduate and graduate coursework (copies are acceptable for the screening process; please note, however, that Official Transcripts must be provided before employment commences). A sample syllabus and one assignment prompt that demonstrates best practices. A statement of teaching philosophy: A one-page document explaining your experiences and commitments to student-centered teaching. Three areas that might be included are 1) your sense of how writers develop and the kind of instruction that supports development, 2) your sense of how that approach works with a diverse student population, and 3) your future plans related to inclusive teaching practices. Contact information for at least three professional references who will provide letters of recommendation.
