Scope of Job:
We seek applicants who are dedicated to serving The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley's diverse student body as an Assistant Professor of the School of Music beginning in the 2023-2024 academic year. This tenure-track faculty position includes courses in our music education sequence, which may include secondary instrumental teaching courses, introduction to music education courses, graduate courses, student-teacher supervision, and other areas according to the candidate's qualifications and as assigned by the director in the School of Music. Additional responsibilities include developing and maintaining positive, collaborative relations with area music educators, demonstrating a commitment to university service, developing and maintaining a strong research presence in the music education field, and establishing and maintaining active recruitment and interactions with the music education community throughout the state and nationally.
UTRGV is a distributed institution. This position is divided between the Edinburg and Brownsville campuses and will require physical presence at multiple locations throughout the Rio Grande Valley on a regular basis.

The UTRGV School of Music prepares students to succeed as teachers, performers, and scholars by studying diverse musical styles, genres, and traditions; conducting research; and collaborating with each other as well as with local, national, and global communities. Minimum Qualifications:
Earned doctorate in music education (ABD considered, with all requirements completed by August 2023.)

Discipline Specific Required Qualifications:
Minimum three years of elementary, middle, or high school music teaching experience.

Preferred Qualification:
1. Expertise in teaching secondary instrumental music education. Preference for a string educator, but all secondary instrumental specialists are encouraged to apply.
2. A demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and student success as well as working with broadly diverse communities.
3. Conversant with current topics in music education and expertise in a broad variety of musical traditions
4. Emerging or established national research profile in peer-reviewed conferences and/or publications.

Additional Information:
UTRGV is a distributed institution. As such and as assigned, the position may
require presence at multiple locations throughout the Rio Grande Valley. Work is
performed primarily in a general office environment. This position is security sensitive
and thereby subject to the provisions of the Texas Education Code
§51.215. The retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement System of
Texas (TRS), subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least
135 days in length. This position has the option to elect the Optional Retirement
Program (ORP) instead of TRS, subject to the position being 40 hours per week
and at least 135 days in length.

Texas law requires faculty members whose primary language is not English to
demonstrate proficiency in English as determined by a satisfactory paper-based
test score of 500 (computer-based of 173 or internet-based of 61) on the Test of
English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or a satisfactory test score of 6.0 on the
