Job Description

This position will support rapid growth in the broad field of environmental security. The center defines “environmental security as the interdisciplinary approach to managing and mitigating for environmental threats to human infrastructure, institutions, health, and prosperity.” Consequently, we are interested in a wide range of potential disciplines and academic expertise, such as Geospatial Technology, Environmental Analytics, Artificial Intelligence, Predictive Modelling, Cognitive or Decision Sciences, Risk Analysis, Environmental Sociology, Meteorology, or Climate Science.

We anticipate the research associate professor to be mid-career with the expectation of the position being committed to both applied research (35-50%) and research administration (50-65%). The candidate will conduct their own research, while also leading the further development of the environmental security research program within the center. This will involve close working relationships with the Virginia Tech National Security Institute and the Virginia Tech—Applied Research Corporation. The successful candidate can expect competitive salary and benefits in a university setting. Position may be located in Arlington, VA or other locations as negotiated.

Required Qualifications

- Given the nature of the research conducted and requirement from federal sponsors, candidates must be a U.S. Citizen
- Ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance.
- Doctorate degree in Geospatial Technology, Environmental Analytics, Artificial Intelligence, Predictive Modelling, Cognitive or Decision Sciences, Risk Analysis, Environmental Sociology, Meteorology, or Climate Science or related discipline.
- Evidence of high potential for excellence in research and development as demonstrated through academic study or experience.
- Scholarship and funding credentials that support the rank of research associate professor.
- Demonstrated mastery of ones’ field of study through publication of relevant research in peer-reviewed academic venues appropriate to the discipline.
- Proficiency with the tools germane to field of research.
- Demonstrated ability to work as a member of a team in executing upon research projects.
- Experience writing grant and contract proposals.
- Experience serving as principal investigator on research grants and contracts.

Preferred Qualifications

- Interest and/or experience in working effectively with a diverse faculty, staff and student population.
- Experience conducting research programs supporting government agency sponsors, including within the defense and intelligence sectors.

Additional Information

This position is located in Arlington, VA. Given the restrictions from the funding agency, candidates must be a U.S. Citizen as well as have the ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance.

The successful candidate will be required to have a criminal conviction check.
