The Center for Student Success (CSS) seeks a creative and collaborative fellow with excellent communications skills to work as aFLI Initiatives Fellow (Program Administrator) who will provide program support to the FLI (First-generation, Limited-Income) Initiatives with a particular focus on the development of the FLI Network as the primary communications, community building, and programmatic hub for the FLI community at JHU. The position reports to the Director of Special Projects / FLI Initiatives in the Center for Student Success. It requires confidence and poise in engaging a range of partners in the CSS and across the Homewood campus (faculty, staff, alum, and students). It also requires a considerable degree of independent action.

The role provides a flexible resource across five CSS programs with a specific focus on the FLI Network, collaborating on both CSS-wide communications, community building, and programming for FLI students and the FLI community at JHU. The fellow will be a highly visible presence within the CSS and in a high-touch role with students, demonstrating an investment in knowing students directly and inviting them into conversation about their experiences, strengths, and aspirations.

The person in this role must move effortlessly among CSS programs and be effective in both student-facing work and collaboration with staff at all levels. The candidate should also demonstrate ability to work well with individuals from all backgrounds to promote equity and access, foster inclusion, and effect positive change.

Through the recent landmark gift of $1.8 billionby Michael R. Bloomberg that is dedicated to meeting 100% demonstrated need with no-loan financial aid packages for first-generation and/or limited-income (FLI) students, the CSS has become a hub for a robust expansion of FLI initiatives and programs at Johns Hopkins University.This full-time role is limited to the two-year period 8/1/21 – 6/1/23.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Develop outreach, engagement and community building initiatives for FLI students, families, alum, staff, and faculty.
  • Support and develop communications projects for the FLI community at JHU, including FLI students, families, alum, staff and faculty. Develop and maintain the FLI Network website, newsletter, and social media outreach.
  • Establish strong inter- and intra-departmental relationships with CSS and across the institution to create strong support and participation in the FLI Network.
    Support the planning and implementation of FLI Network Programs in collaboration with program partners in CSS, Life Design, DAR and the “I’M FIRST” student advisory board. Develop and coordinate workshops keyed to CSS-wide efforts, e.g. summer opportunities/high impact practices, financial wellness, networking, academic opportunities and support, and well-being. Provide mentorship, guidance, and supervision for the FLI Network student advisory board, “I’M FIRST.” Execute FLI Network signature programs including a welcome reception, National First- Generation Day, Halfway There, and a graduation celebration.

Minimum Qualifications (Mandatory):

  • Bachelor’s Degree required.
  • MA/MFA graduate or advanced Ph.D. student preferred.
  • Two years directly related experience required.
  • Three years related experience preferred.

This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
