Position Title
Student Athlete Psychological Services Psychologist
Overview
Provide diagnostic assessment and psychotherapeutic interventions to support the wellbeing of the varsity student-athlete population.
Essential Duties:
- Provide counseling, diagnostic assessment, and crisis intervention to student-athletes dealing with mental health and developmental challenges. Work with both on- and off-campus resources to provide coordinated support to students in need. Provide culturally appropriate individual, group counseling, and outreach to diverse student populations.
- Work in collaboration with the PCC training director to coordinate SAPS training program. Work with local doctoral programs to promote SAPS training program. Coordinate interviews with prospective trainees. Provide supervision for clinical interns or practicum students and collaborative consultation with other staff as needed. Maintain communication with program personnel at trainee institutions regarding trainee progress and needs. Evaluate trainee performance and progress and provide related feedback to trainees.
- Diagnostic assessment and intervention in acute crisis such as risk of suicide, trauma, and/or major campus catastrophe. Provide crisis intervention for student-athletes who are experiencing acute emotional distress as a result of varying emergencies such as trauma, e.g. sexual assault, death, substance use, or who are a danger to themselves or others. Participation in monthly after hours on-call crisis rotation for the PCC .
- Provide leadership in developing outreach strategies and educational programs that are consistent with the mission and outreach plan of the SAPS /Personal Counseling Center, and Athletics. Provide consultation/representation of PCC / SAPS with Athletics and Student Affairs in various campus initiatives via committee and liaison work as assigned.
- Write up psychological intakes, critical incidences, and progress notes on each session/collateral contact/student contact in electronic medical records. Maintain records necessary for rendering professional services to students and as required by law, regulations, or institutional procedures. Ensure records are secured safely and confidentially.
- Work in collaboration with the Sr. Associate Athletic Director of Health & Wellness to maintain a presence within the Big East and NCAA organizations focused on student-athlete mental health and wellness. Support efforts to work in collaboration with Big East and NCAA partners to maintain the highest quality of resources for student-athlete mental health.
- Perform all other duties as may be required.
- Master’s degree in social work, psychology, or counseling from accredited institution required. Doctorate in counseling or psychology preferred. Mental performance training preferred.
- Minimum of 5 years’ experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Excellent counseling, crisis intervention, assessment, and communication skills.
- Highly skilled in working with a college population with a specialization in working with student-athletes.
- Excellent cultural competence and extensive experience working effectively with diverse populations.
- Ability to work collaboratively and creatively in developing outreach and prevention services.
- Mental health license or license eligible in Rhode Island.
- Certified Mental Performance Consultant ( CMPC ).
- Experience working with trauma, eating disorders ( RED -S), and substance abuse assessment. Ability to work collaboratively and creatively in developing outreach and prevention services.
