THE UNIVERSITY: California State University, East Bay (CSUEB), one of the 23 California State Universities, is a comprehensive university serving the San Francisco Bay Area/Silicon Valley. THE DEPARTMENT: The Department of Ethnic Studies provides an academically rigorous program that substantively contributes to the University's public commitment to provide a multicultural learning experience. Our comparative and interdisciplinary program covers six core areas: American Indian Studies; Asian American Studies; Black Studies; Chicanx and Latinx Studies; Comparative Ethnic Studies; and Genders and Sexualities in Communities of Color. In our courses, we teach students to analyze social relations of race, class, gender, and sexuality; develop nuanced understandings of social justice; and act as socially responsible global citizens. The Department of Ethnic Studies has eight full-time faculty members and four full-time lecturers. DUTIES OF THE POSITION : ​We seek an individual to teach classes in and who has strong research and teaching interests in the areas of American Indian/Indigenous Studies or Comparative Ethnic Studies, including research and teaching in one or more of the following areas: Federal Indian Policy and law, indigeneity and migration, and be able to help develop curriculum around anti-colonialism, decolonization, and connecting local, regional, and transnational issues; Comparative and Relational Ethnic Studies, Critical Mixed Race Studies, community engagement, labor, geography, abolition, theater and performing arts, ethnic music and dance, and various modes of cultural expression. The new faculty member would develop and teach a variety of courses in our department, primarily courses that meet the new CSU Ethnic Studies Graduation Requirement (Area F).

Please note that teaching assignments at California State University, East Bay include courses at the Hayward, Concord, and Online campuses. The policy and expectation of the California State University is that tenure-track faculty members will perform their duties within the state of California. In addition to teaching, all faculty have advising responsibilities, assist the department with administrative and/or committee work, and are expected to assume campus-wide committee responsibilities.

RANK AND SALARY: Assistant Professor. Salary is dependent upon educational preparation and experience. Subject to budgetary authorization.

The salary schedule information for the Instructional Faculty - Academic Year Classification is available based on the following ranges:

Instructional Faculty AY ( Range 2 ) - $4,530 – $6,056

Instructional Faculty AY ( Range 3 ) - $5,405 – $11,994

Instructional Faculty AY ( Range 4 ) - $6,190 – $13,172

Instructional Faculty AY ( Range 5 ) - $7,794 – $13,797

The anticipated hiring range is generally at or near the minimum of the appropriate range, commensurate with education and experience.

DATE OF APPOINTMENT: Fall Semester, 2023

QUALIFICATIONS: ​Doctorate (Ph.D) or ABD with doctorate degree awarded by August 2023 in one of the Social Sciences or a closely related field. Ordinarily, the subject areas encompassed should be History, Political Science, Geography, or Sociology, Ethnic Studies, Gender/Women’s Studies, Education, Sociology, Cultural Studies, American Indian / Indigenous Studies, Anthropology, or any related interdisciplinary field with degree in hand no later than the effective date of the appointment.

Demonstrate commitment to anticolonial, feminist of color, and antiracist pedagogical strategies and mentoring undergraduate students, actively engaged in research and demonstrated record of success (or potential for success) in research or creative activities with diverse populations. Demonstrate their ability to teach comparatively on the shared lived experiences of multiple communities of color (e.g., American Indian, Asian American/Pacific Islander; Black/African/African American; Chicanx/Latinx, mixed race, (undocumented) immigrants, and/or refugees) in the realm of community formation, organizing, and/or expressive culture. Demonstrate experience in teaching, mentoring, research, community service and/or social justice that has prepared them to contribute to our commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI).
