Job Description

The R.B. Annis School of Engineering seeks applications for a Laboratory Technician. This is a full-time, exempt staff position.

The Laboratory Technician will support the instructional and research laboratory needs in the R.B. Annis School of Engineering; works in conjunction with the Manager of Mechanical Systems to manage and/or support laboratory supplies, materials, equipment purchase, and repair, maintenance, student workers, operating budget and training; and maintain market and industry knowledge of equipment, methodology, standards, and policies.

Qualifications
  • Associate's degree or equivalent trade school/apprenticeship program, or at least 5 years of experience working with equipment commonly found in instructional engineering laboratories
  • Experience in management and/or operations of laboratory and shop equipment
  • Working knowledge of safety policies and procedures for laboratory and shop equipment
Responsibilities
  • Plans, maintains, and/or purchases the equipment and supplies used in our shops and laboratories
  • Supports faculty planning and implementation of lab experiences for students
  • Implements and helps to enforce a safety plan for all of our labs, including Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) and other records necessary for complete compliance of all regulations and accreditation policies
  • Works with the faculty, students, and Manager of Mechanical Systems to assist in DesignSpine projects, which are authentic engineering design projects, typically for external customers, run by student teams
  • Assists faculty and students with the safe and effective use of equipment, machines, and tools in the laboratory with the goal of teaching system capabilities and limitations
  • Assists with the yearly operating budget and capital expenditures requests
  • Assists with maintaining a proper inventory of supplies
  • Assists in writing and reviewing procedures of the engineering laboratories
  • Familiar with mechanical drawings, electrical schematics, shop operations, etc
