The College of Arts and Sciences at Lawrence Technological University seeks a new Chair of the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science (MCS). Reporting directly to the Dean, the Chair of MCS will be an integral and essential part of the college’s academic leadership team.

The successful candidate is student focused and through strong industry partnerships and collaboration is committed to grow student investment and enrollment and produce job-ready graduates. The next Chair is a strong promoter of research and faculty development.  

The Chair will work collaboratively and proactively with College and University leadership, faculty, staff, and students, partners with other academic units across campus, and with external stakeholders to advance the mission and goals of the MCS, CoAS, and LTU. The Chair will build upon the department and college’s legacy of excellence in teaching, research, and service. The incumbent must be a leader with exemplary record of teaching, research, service, and professional engagement, a strong, demonstrable commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion, effective academic administration, and successful mentorship and professional development of faculty, staff, and students.

The ideal candidate is expected to establish and maintain an extramurally funded, active research program in an area of expertise, teach graduate and undergraduate courses as needed, and serve the department, college, and the university in various capacities. The Chair is also expected to proactively stimulate research collaborations among MCS faculty and faculty across colleges.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Terminal degree in mathematics, computer science, or a closely related field
  • Tenured as Associate Professor or Professor
  • Strong record of accomplishments in administration, teaching, research, and service

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Although candidates within any subdiscipline of mathematics or computer science are encouraged to apply, preference will be given to candidates with expertise in computer science.

About the Institution

Lawrence Technological University ranks in the top tier of U.S. News & World Report's America's 2023 Best Colleges and continues to score high in the most prestigious categories including being recognized as a “Best Value Schools.” Lawrence Tech was founded as a college of engineering with only a few hundred students and a handful of faculty. Today it offers more than 100 programs in four colleges, with a total enrollment of approximately 3,000 students, and employs more than 400 full- and part-time faculty. In terms of enrollment, Lawrence Tech is among Michigan’s largest independent colleges.

In 1950, associate programs were added to Lawrence Tech’s baccalaureate offerings. In 1952 the College of Business and Information Technology was re-established, having its origins in an earlier industrial engineering curriculum. Master’s degree programs in management were launched in 1989. The College of Architecture and Design evolved in 1962 from the former architectural engineering department and in 1993 launched a Master of Architecture program. The College of Arts and Sciences was established in 1967. Master’s degree programs in engineering were begun in 1990 and in Arts and Sciences in 1997. Doctoral programs were launched in 2002. In 2011 competitive athletics returned to campus with the University’s entry into the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics. LTU now supports 26 varsity men's and women's teams in baseball, basketball, bowling, cross country, football, golf, ice hockey, lacrosse, soccer, softball, tennis, and volleyball – and a pep band, marching band, and dance team.

The University also offers programs with partner universities in Asia, Europe, Mexico, and the Middle East.

About the Department of Mathematics & Computer Science

 

In 2022, our on-line master’s program in computer science ranked 11th in the country. Students discover courses that combine theoretical computer science foundations with industry-relevant practical knowledge. LTU’s internationally recognized faculty help to guide each student. This personal attention optimizes the learning experience and enhances creativity and complex problem-solving skills.

With a unique approach to computer science education, it’s no wonder that LTU students reach the highest possible levels in their fields. LTU students publish more peer-reviewed scientific papers than most other computer science departments, including leading private and public universities. 

In the end, our students begin exciting careers and in fact, a recent ranking by Yahoo showed LTU’s return on investment to be in the top 5 % of all Colleges and Universities in the USA.

MCS is excited to offer cutting edge concentrations in Actuary Science and programs in Data Science.

Living in the Area

Lawrence Tech is located in suburban Southfield, Michigan with a population of 76,000. Southfield, located in Oakland County, is ranked second in the nation for per capita income in counties with more than one million people. Attracting both young professionals and retirees, Southfield offers an urban/suburban blend with restaurants, coffee shops, shopping, museums, galleries, a zoo, and extensive parks and recreation areas with swimming pools, tennis and volleyball courts, and ice rinks. The city also offers 30 miles of cycling, hiking and nature trails, a museum; two public golf courses; and nearly 750 acres of park land.

The area offers lower cost of living, unemployment, and crime rates than the rest of the country. Higher school spending rounds out the benefits of living in Southfield.
