Job Details

Jazz Studies (Assistant/Associate Professor or Artist-in-Residence) . Skidmore College, a vibrant liberal arts college with a long-standing and thriving investment in music, seeks a colleague to champion and lead jazz activities (broadly understood) while also working collaboratively within a highly interdependent department. We welcome applicants from traditional scholarly backgrounds as well as from a breadth of practice-focused backgrounds. The successful candidate will be an active performer who demonstrates a commitment to liberal-arts education and to Skidmore’s tradition of “hand and mind” (including the integration of performance and academics); who embraces musical instruction of students at all level; and who is prepared to expose our students to the musical breadth of jazz as a set of traditions and future potentials. Teaching responsibilities consist of ensemble direction and individual instruction, with the possibility of coursework (e.g., in improvisation, technology and production, theory and history), according to the candidate’s qualifications and interests.

Education: Terminal degree (or ABD) is required for tenure-track hire and is preferred, but not required, for AiR hire.

We are especially interested in candidates who can proactively foster an environment of inclusivity. Individuals from historically underrepresented groups, and those with experience teaching and mentoring students from a variety of backgrounds, are encouraged to apply.

An appointment will be made as Assistant/Associate Professor or Artist-in-Residence, depending on the candidate’s qualifications and interests. (Both categories entail full-time continuing contracts with periodic sabbaticals but differ in terms of tenure eligibility and service and teaching expectations.)

Required documents needed to apply:

Applicants must submit a letter of application, cv with links to rehearsal and/or performance footage, and contact information for 3-5 references (who will only be contacted at a later stage of the search). Letters of application should clearly state: the applicant’s interest in liberal-arts education and in Skidmore in particular; the applicant’s understanding of, and commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion; and the applicant’s creative/scholarly and teaching interests and achievements. Submit applications online here. Application review will begin January 7, 2023.

Pay Range: Commensurate with experience

In order to prevent or significantly reduce the risk of COVID-19 transmission at Skidmore College and protect all members of the College community from infection, successful candidates will be required to submit proof of full vaccination as a condition of employment, unless exempted as a reasonable accommodation of a medical condition or sincerely religious belief or practice.
