Brief Summary of Work for this Position

The Instructional Designer provides assistance in the development of online course design and delivery and recommends best practices for both traditional and adult learners. This position serves as an integral part of a team operating in a consultative model to support the instructional design and delivery of high-quality online courses with the faculty. The ID will work collaboratively with the faculty on the creation of high-quality online, hybrid, and web-enhanced courses to ensure the effective use of academic technology in enhancing teaching and learning.

The Instructional Designer will also ensure consistency and efficiency in course design and technology adoption and will research new technologies and pedagogies as needed to serve this mission. Other duties include providing course quality reviews for best instructional practices and accessibility, providing training opportunities to faculty, and researching current trends in online learning.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
  • Master’s Degree in Instructional Design, Instructional Technology, or Educational Technology or related educational field with comparable work experience in Instructional Design
Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills & Experience
  • Experience supporting, designing, developing, and delivering online, hybrid, and/or web-enhanced courses.
  • Experience with teaching and training.
  • Experience converting F2F instruction to online/hybrid instruction and/or designing instruction for online learning.
  • Familiarity with various instructional methods, assessment strategies, and instructional technology solutions.
  • Experience with Learning Management Systems.
  • Communicates clearly in written and verbal form and conveys technical situations in user-friendly terms.
  • Efficient project management skills.
  • Strong presentation skills.
  • Ability to work in a team environment as well as independently.
  • Ability to use a wide array of multimedia tools.
  • Experience supporting online education & technology-enhanced teaching.
  • Understanding accessibility principles and creating accessible content for online learning.
  • Understanding of quality-driven online course principles such as Quality Matters/ OLC Scorecard.
  • Highly collaborative and team-orientated track record.
  • Experience using and training others to use innovative technological tools to enhance teaching.
  • Ability to build and maintain relationships with stakeholders across the university and the online learning community at large.

Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit

The Office of Distance Education and eLearning primary function falls under Academic Affairs Distance Education. The unit provides services to faculty in the development of online, hybrid, and web-enhanced courses. eLearning Instructional Designers consult with faculty, support the design and development of online courses, and provide professional development and training to faculty. The outcome of this service is to enhance teaching and learning for faculty and students.
