Job Description:

SUNY Empire State College is currently seeking a Metadata Coordinator and Support Specialist. The SUNY Library Services Metadata Coordinator and Support Specialist (State Title: Staff Associate) will coordinate metadata strategies and activities for SUNY Library Services' (SLS) shared consortia environment. The incumbent will make recommendations and implement approved metadata policies, procedures, and processes. In addition to coordination of metadata strategies for the shared library system, they will collaborate and coordinate with all SLS staff to provide direct support to all libraries in areas of resource management and metadata, analytics, troubleshooting discovery and e-resources, general systems configuration, and other assigned areas within Alma/Primo and related library systems. The Metadata Coordinator will be a key contributor to shared cataloging and metadata services for campuses.

This position reports to the Associate Director for SUNY Library Services within the SUNY Office of Library and Information Services.

Responsibilities:

Metadata Coordinator (50%)

  • Manages batch loading, import profiles, deletions, and global editing of bibliographic records within the Alma Network Zone (NZ).
  • Monitors Alma and related system updates, tests enhancements, new functionality and reports results.
  • Troubleshoots issues arising within the NZ and SUNY LSP environment and resolves them in support of campus libraries.
  • Contributes to vendor management with Ex Libris, OCLC, and other vendors related to the SUNY Network Zone and the overall metadata ecosystem of SUNY libraries. Work with vendors, campuses, and other stakeholders to resolve problems related to the SUNY Network Zone and metadata environment.
  • Review policies, procedures and best practices related to the Network Zone and metadata management in the shared library services platform.
  • Coordinate training and planning for areas related to metadata and resource management within SUNY, and create and deliver training in a variety of methods.
  • Serve as a consultant to metadata creators across the consortia.
  • Work closely with internal SUNY Library Services and Campus staff to develop and maintain analytics reports related to resource management.
  • Communicate about projects and metadata-related issues to larger groups and interested parties.

Support Specialist (50%)

  • Serves as support for other SUNY Library Services positions as necessary and perform other duties as assigned. Seeks new knowledge and training in order to update skills, enhance performance, and expand knowledge in all areas of Alma/Primo VE and library technology.
  • Work with staff to review and find explanations or resolutions to questions and issues related the Network Zone in Alma/Primo.
  • Provide direct support to all libraries in areas of resource management and metadata, analytics, troubleshooting discovery and e-resources, general systems configuration, and other assigned areas within Alma/Primo.
  • Participate in support team and provide direct support to a variety of campuses in areas related to management of the Library Services Platform or related technology.
  • Perform original cataloging and copy cataloging for libraries.
  • Perform metadata work on behalf of campuses, including repositories, research data, e-resources, and archives.
  • Manage and lead projects for and with campuses related to their support needs in areas related to library technology and support management.

Requirements:

Required Qualifications:

  • ALA accredited master's degree in library or information science, master's degree in related field, or equivalent education and experience.
  • At least two years' demonstrated experience with metadata schema (MARC, Dublin Core, METS, FRBR, RDA), working with MARC bibliographic records, building and running batch processes and understanding of cataloging workflows.
  • Ability to create documentation in various forms, including communicating a high level of technical detail to a variety of audiences.
  • Strong organizational and problem-solving skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in a distributed team environment and to manage multiple projects and priorities successfully.
  • Willingness and ability to collaborate on projects or initiatives outside of functional program area, as needed.
  • Experience managing metadata workflows for e-resources, print resources, and other media.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with the Alma Library Services Platform and/or Primo/Primo VE.
  • Experience in a public library or academic library shared bibliographic environment or service structure.
  • Experience troubleshooting library system issues, either remotely or in-person.
  • Demonstrated experience developing and delivering training programs.
  • Experience with institutional repositories.
  • Familiarity with acquisitions workflows, including system integrations and funds/budget management within library systems.

  • This position will be located at one of the SUNY Empire State College regional locations.

Additional Information:

Rank/Salary: SL4/$65,000+ dependent upon experience and qualifications.
