Position Summary
Dr. Julia Saltz’s lab studies the evolutionary genetics of animal behaviors, using the fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster as a model system.
We are looking for a highly motivated Lab Management Assistant II to facilitate scientific experiments with fruit flies, coordinate logistics for the day-to-day lab operations, and contribute intellectually to lab meetings and other scientific conversations.
The Lab Management Assistant II should have experience conducting scientific research (ideally in insect evolution and ecology) both independently and as part of a team.
This is a benefits eligible, one-year term limited position. In addition, position may require occasional extended work hours (e.g. after 5:00 PM and/or weekends) in order to meet project deadlines.
Essential Functions
- Prepares media for experimental use
- Ensures glassware, other lab supplies and equipment are available, clean, and easily available
- Performs intermediate research techniques as required
- Responsible for a database
- Responsible for inventory supply and completes purchase orders
- Coordinates undergraduate researchers
- Performs all other duties as assigned
- HS diploma
- 3 years of experience in scientific research
- In lieu of the experience requirement, additional related education, above and beyond what is required, on an equivalent year for year basis may be substituted
- Ability to multitask, prioritize, and meet deadlines
- Excellent analytical skills
- Excellent organizational and time management skills
- Excellent presentation skills including verbal and written communications
- Adaptable to changes and detailed oriented
- Exceptional knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel as well as collaborative datasharing platforms such as Google Drive
- Demonstrated decision-making ability and good judgment
- Ability to interpret complex regulations and requirements
- Bachelor’s or equivalent in a relevant field preferred
- Knowledge of analytical laboratory equipment
- Passion and enthusiasm for science
- Knowledge of best practices for a research lab
- Strong attention to detail and ability to be proactive and take initiative
- Ability to work in a collaborative environment
