Summary

Rice University seeks a motivated veterinarian to provide clinical veterinary support and collaboration to animal research. We seek a candidate with a strong interest in partnering with investigators to provide training in protocol development, teaching, communication and collaboration with researchers and staff. Under the leadership of the Attending Veterinarian (AV), the staff veterinary is responsible for training, overseeing, and performing veterinary support and guidance to animal researchers. This position will also assist researchers in the development of IACUC protocols and will work closely with the IACUC program to ensure compliance with animal welfare standards and regulations by AAALAC, USDA, and OLAW. Provides emergency clinical coverage on weekends and holidays on a rotating basis with the AV.

Salary

$125,000 to $140,000 depending on experience and qualifications

Minimum Requirements
  • Doctorate DVM or VMD
  • 3 years of experience in Laboratory Animal Medicine
  • Ability to obtain licensure in the state of Texas within 3 months of employment
Essential Functions
  • Works with Facility manager and animal care staff to maintain a preventive medicine program that may include quarantine, disease surveillance, and clinical health
  • Provides monitoring of clinical concerns and advises investigators on treatment and care
  • Participates in maintaining standards and regulations of OLAW, USDA, OSHA, AAALAC and other regulatory agencies and associations as they apply to veterinary programs/facilities
  • The staff veterinarian will provide consultation to animal users, including animal model development and technical expertise in clinical procedures (administration of substances and collection of tissue samples) surgical approaches, anesthesia, analgesia, euthanasia, and working knowledge of hazards and development of safe handling procedures as required by research activity.
  • Works proactively and collaboratively with the IACUC administration to develop and implement an effective animal care and use training program (e.g., surgical techniques, clinical procedures) to attain competency and ensure compliance in research and teaching.
  • Participates as an alternate member of Rice’s Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee and to provide consultation and veterinary prereview of protocol submissions
  • Performs other job-related duties as required
Other Requirements:
  • Working knowledge of and experience with all federal and state regulations and requirements related to animals used in research
  • Experience managing a program accredited by AAALAC
  • Direct experience in research animal welfare oversight, quality assurance, and IACUC functions in a animal research facility
  • Ability to function independently with minimal supervision and the capacity to expand areas of expertise and learn new skills to meet changing needs
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and a cooperative and communicative nature
  • Experience working collaboratively to achieve results
