CONTEXT OF THE JOB:

Under the general direction of the Director, HR Business Partner Operations, the Sr HR Generalist performs a variety of associated complex administrative, business continuity and planning activities in support of the Provost's Office and HR Business Partner Operations. This role also partners with various other academic and administrative offices across the university, as needed. The Sr HR Generalist provides HR support on all aspects of human resources including, but not limited to, faculty and staff recruitment, compensation, performance management, employee relations and benefits.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

Provost's Office/Faculty
  • In support of the Vice Provost of Faculty Affairs and the Director, HR Business Partner Operations, participates in all HR aspects for faculty. Provides guidance and executes on HR matters related to employee and labor relations, performance management, and university agreements, policies and procedures as outlined in the faculty handbook and AAUP Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA).
  • Provides consultation and support to the Promotion & Tenure process, including generating P&T letters, updating spreadsheets, soliciting information from departments, and providing data to the University P&T Committee, the President's Office, and the Institutional Research and Effectiveness Office. Provide training and technical support to end users on web-based applications such as the faculty appraisal system and the eBinder P&T system.
  • Facilitates the faculty appraisal process, including reviewing the appraisal system, during the active review period, to ensure that appraisals are completed in a timely manner. Responds to and investigates systems related issues and provides guidance.
  • Coordinates the completion of the relevant portions of the Spring and Fall Board of Trustees booklet.
  • Works with colleagues in HR-IT, HR Benefits, and IRE to compile reports for submission to the AAUP leadership per the CBA's requirements.
  • In collaboration with the HR Records Team, assists with data clean-up efforts to ensure that faculty contract dates are accurate in the HR PeopleSoft system. Assists the Faculty Affairs team with gathering data in response to contract related questions from faculty and administrators. Assists with faculty affairs related projects, as needed.
  • Provides guidance and interpretation to inquiries related to the Faculty Handbook. Manages any updates to the Faculty Handbook and website as needed. Acts as proxy for Director, HR Business Partner Operations as needed for clients.

HR Business Partner Operations
  • Supports strategic HR projects that seek to significantly improve HR consultation and advisory functions within the institution.
  • Supports translating organizational needs into HR business requirements, creating meaningful HR best practices.
  • Recommends and supports implementation of process improvements.
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

Colleges and Administrative Units
  • As aligned or as needed, serves as a central point of contact for faculty and staff HR needs.
  • Facilitates search approvals, drafting, and submitting job descriptions, external advertisements, salary determinations, use of the Predictive Index (PI), and management of the University's applicant tracking system.
  • Provides support and management of employee/labor relations issues to include, but not limited to, intake of manager/employee conflicts, pay equity issues, performance improvement plans, and discipline up to a written warning.
  • Assists with HR processing functions. This includes, but is not limited to, JED submissions, S-contracts, grad student contracts, bi-weekly payroll approval.
  • Manages faculty and staff FMLA cases.
  • Onboards non-benefitted employees.
  • Generates reports as necessary.
  • Ensures efficient and consistent compliance with University, Federal, State policies and guidelines in administering various types of leave such as FMLA, Parental leave, and Worker's Compensation.

QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Bachelor's degree in business or human resources and four years of related experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Professional HR Certification (PHR, SHRM-CP) preferred.
  • Ability to adapt and respond to changing work situations and environments.
  • Ability to work independently, strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Knowledge of federal and state employment laws & the ability to interpret, explain and apply employment policies, practices, and procedures.
  • Knowledge of employee relation best practices.
  • Ability to communicate (verbally and in written format) effectively and to interact well with people of all ages and diverse backgrounds.
  • Skilled in collecting, compiling, evaluating, and analyzing data from a variety of sources.
  • Ability to present reports and recommend solutions.
  • Advanced proficiency in word processing, spreadsheet, & database applications for the development of reports, presentations & information dissemination.
  • Ability to safeguard confidential information.
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Effective customer service skills.
