GENERAL PURPOSE: Under the direction of the Mission Bay Aquatic Center Director, the MBAC Instructional Supervisor is responsible for supervision of the MBAC Instructional and Rental programs. Duties include hiring, training, staff scheduling, developing instructional curriculum and materials, supervising safety and instruction of classes and rentals, and assisting in promotional efforts. This position must provide excellent customer service, supervise programming, and complete administrative tasks. All MBAC full-time staff also serve as “duty” persons that manage and supervise the facility and all programs at scheduled times.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
- Supervises instructional programming across all MBAC instructional programs focusing on wakesports and surfing but also including paddling and sailing
- Develops curriculum and oversees implementation of MBAC watersports instructional programming
- Supervises rental operations to ensure participant safety, learning opportunities, proper equipment care, member and customer satisfaction
- Schedules qualified staff and supervises rental operations, university credit classes, recreation classes, private lessons, youth camp instruction, and instructional events in paddling and rowing
- Supervises all daily operational functions of MBAC when assigned as “duty person” including but not limited to ensuring safety, providing excellent customer service, handling and reporting customer and employee injuries, opening and closing the facility, and performing other operational functions as needed
- Coordinates the recruiting, hiring, training, scheduling, and supervision of Instructors, Program Assistants, and Dockmasters
- Develops and implements instructional curriculums that address participant safety as the highest priority
- Assists in working with the School of Exercise and Nutritional Sciences at SDSU and Education Recreation department at USD to conduct credit class offerings including class schedules, curriculums, accurate and timely grading, and other administration
- Evaluates equipment and program improvements and innovations to enhance operations for efficiency and effectiveness
- Communicates equipment and facility issues and changes as they arise
- Performs other related duties and responsibilities as assigned
Strategic Planning
- Ensures the development, planning, coordination, and management of program opportunities
- Ensures that programs are inclusive and conducted in accordance with approved rules and regulations that address participant safety as the top priority
- Ensures that instructional classes provide learning opportunities, knowledge, and skills through a well-developed curriculum and quality instruction
- Ensures that rental operations provide fun participant experiences that focus on safety and skill education including proper use and care of equipment
- Provides detailed written class curriculums for staff reference
- Supervises classes and instructors with assessments that include constructive feedback
- Evaluates the effectiveness of programs and classes using participant feedback and evaluations
- Develops program or operational additions or alternatives for revenue growth
- Implements risk management/safety plan, including regular review of injury/accident reports and changes required to avoid reoccurrence
Administration
- Ensures all deadlines are met and procedures are followed
- Reviews weekly payroll reports
- Assists in completing class enrollment reports
- Assists with budget preparation and rebudget changes
- Communicates regularly with staff on updates and changes that affect operations
- Coordinates and participates in staff meetings
- Meets with supervisor to discuss issues and ensures proper resolution
- Submits recommendations to supervisor for part-time staff award recommendations
- Reports on goal progress to supervisor
- Assists in developing departmental goals, staff training manual, and programs
- Attends staff meetings and trainings and serves as department representative on various committees.
Staff Management
- Conducts hiring/termination, training, development, and evaluation of staff and volunteers under supervision in a high standard
- Maintains appropriate staffing levels to facilitate satisfactory operation of instructional and rental programs
- Ensures proper scheduling of part-time and full-time staff needed to accomplish program tasks
- Ensures all hiring/termination is conducted in accordance with A.S. policy
- Ensures each employee is given written information about their job responsibilities, procedures, and policies
- Provides each employee with an orientation and introduction to the corporation, facility, department, and personnel, including the specific standards that apply to each area
- Describes each job's relationship to both the mission of Associated Students and its uniqueness as a student-directed corporation
- Educates employees on all current MBAC and Associated Students policies
- Directs work courteously and gives clear, specific, and realistic goals
- When assigning tasks, provides information, training, materials, and support as appropriate
- Assesses and monitors each employee's knowledge, understanding, ability, readiness, and willingness to perform each assignment, then makes appropriate response
- Conducts effective staff meetings frequently and regularly to ensure timely dissemination of information, changes, and items that affect operations and customer service
- Makes corrections positively and promptly and includes specific suggestions for change as soon after the event as possible, considering privacy factors
- Corrects individual problems with staff they supervise
- Develops comprehensive training programs to continually improve safety, knowledge, communication, effectiveness, and efficiency
Safety
- Ensures all operations are conducted with safety of staff and customers as the first priority in accordance with the Injury and Illness Prevention Plan and other safety policies
- Review Injury and Illness Prevention Plan annually and ensure that all corporate and department safety plans are up-to-date
- Adheres to A.S. and MBAC Codes of Safe Practices
- Ensures all employees are provided safety training
- Ensures all staff possess required certifications within respective job descriptions
- Creates policies and procedures to ensure all areas are in compliance with safety codes and practices
- Completes Injury and/or Incident Reports for each occurrence. Performs follow-up and makes recommendations for corrections as needed
Customer Service & Collaboration
- Develops and maintains positive working relationships with MBAC staff, A.S./university staff, City of San Diego staff, contractors, partners, community representatives, and other regular contacts and customers
- Works cooperatively with all MBAC departments, Associated Students of SDSU, Aztec Recreation, UCSD Recreation, and USD Recreation
- Ensures A.S. customer service guidelines are met by all staff in department
- Ensures department standards are established and met by all staff in department
- Responds to customer service needs promptly and with fairness to accomplish resolution
- Represents Associated Students and MBAC at committee meetings as assigned
QUALIFICATIONS
Education:
- Four year degree from an accredited college or university preferred, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Experience:
- Minimum five years of demonstrated experience in watersport instruction, supervision, and program management
- Must have excellent technical skills (or excellent understanding of) in at least two of the following sports: sailing, wakesports, paddling, and surfing.
- Minimum six years of experience in boat handling and operation of powerboats
- Excellent boat trailering skills
- Sailing skills and experience preferred
- Demonstrated experience serving a diverse population of customers
- Experience working in a university environment preferred
- Experience with the needs and requirements of patrons with disabilities and experience with ADA guidelines preferred
Licenses & Certifications Requirements
- Red Cross Lifeguarding certification
- California Boater Card
- Valid Driver License
- US Coast Guard Merchant Mariner Credential
- US Sailing Level 1 instructor preferred
- American Canoe Association Instructor preferred
- Red Cross Lifeguarding Instructor preferred

COMPENSATION
Starting range: $22.60 - to $24.52 per hour
SCHEDULE & WORKING CONDITIONS
This is a full-time position scheduled to work an alternating weekly schedule of Tuesday through Saturday and Monday through Friday. Flexibility and willingness to work long and irregular hours and days, including early mornings, evenings, and some weekends is required.

This position requires occasional business-related driving. A valid California Driver License and proof of automobile insurance is required.
