Special Information

The Geography, Planning and Recreation Department offers an array of degrees at the undergraduate and graduate level, including our newly redesigned Geography, Environment and Society BS degree, which also includes multiple minors, including Urban Planning and Design, Critical Sustainability Studies, GIS, Physical Geography, and Regional Geography. Our program also has a Geography master's degree, an accelerated Geographic Information Science with Remote Sensing online master's degree, and graduate certificates in Community Planning and GIS. Our department has 16 faculty and an inviting, convivial atmosphere.

Our department, and the university more broadly, has a strong commitment to sustainability and justice. President Cruz-Rivera's Elevating Excellence strategic plan calls for equitable social and economic impacts. He recently announced a campus climate emergency and a carbon neutrality commitment by 2030. The university has initiated a climate action planning process and has strong ties to the City of Flagstaff regarding sustainability and climate action. Starting in fall of 2023, NAU will offer free tuition to resident students with household incomes of less than $65,000 per year.

Our department, college, and the university have a strong commitment to teaching stream faculty. During Summer 2022, the university implemented an overhauled and more formalized teaching professor track and professor of practice track. These both include three promotion steps (i.e., assistant, associate, and full). Furthermore, teaching stream faculty currently hold department chair and assistant/associate dean positions in our college. Teaching stream faculty can and do serve as department representatives on the faculty senate.
