Job Description Summary
The Penn Medicine Nudge Unit is currently recruiting a talented and proven leader to be its Director of Strategy and Operations. The Penn Medicine Nudge Unit is an exciting and fast-paced opportunity for motivated, entrepreneurial individuals to improve health and effect systemic change at Penn Medicine and across the healthcare industry.

The Director of Strategy and Operations will be responsible for leading Nudge Unit staff in executing projects across the spectrum of stakeholder engagement, contextual research, intervention design, rapid experimentation, and implementation. The Director of Strategy and Operations will co-lead Nudge Unit operations including staffing allocation, personnel management, and business plan development for the overall portfolio of projects. This position requires a high degree of sophistication, resourcefulness, creativity and the ability to lead by influencing others at all levels across the organization. The Director of Strategy and Operations must have the ability to develop and cultivate stakeholder relationships, evaluate outcomes, manage project budgets, craft business cases, manage and develop staff, and refine and extend the Nudge Unit's toolkits to ensure that staff can advance projects efficiently and effectively towards implementation and impact. The ability to make key decisions, think creatively, and be disciplined in interpreting project/program outcomes to direct future strategy will allow success in this role.

Background. The Penn Medicine Nudge Unit is a joint venture between the Penn Medicine Center for Health Care Innovation (CHCI) and the University of Pennsylvania Center for Health Incentives and Behavioral Economics (CHIBE). Founded in 2016, the Penn Medicine Nudge Unit is the world's first behavioral design team embedded within a health system. The Nudge Unit leverages insights from behavioral and implementation science to design, implement, evaluate, and disseminate scalable nudges to steer medical decision-making toward higher-value care, improved patient outcomes, and more equitable health care delivery. Consistent throughout the work of the Nudge Unit is a desire to make the right choice the easy choice.

Since 2016, the Penn Medicine Nudge Unit worked on more than 100 projects, most of which include testing interventions within health systems, including more than 25 randomized trials resulting in over 100 publications in leading medical journals such as NEJM, JAMA, Nature, and PNAS. The Nudge Unit currently supports a broad portfolio of projects to improve care within Penn Medicine as well as an extramurally funded program of research aimed at improving acute care and the prevention of overdoses and injuries. In its portfolio, the Nudge Unit commonly leverages electronic health records, automated text messaging, smartphone apps, and other digital interventions to change behavior.”

Job Description

Director Level C accountabilities:
  • Oversee the design and execution of Nudge Unit health system request for proposal supported projects and coordinate Nudge Unit supported clinical teams towards executing project goals
  • Lead the creation of a strategy and toolkits for stakeholder engagement, contextual research, intervention design, rapid experimentation, and implementation across all Nudge Unit projects
  • Oversee personnel management for Nudge Unit staff and work with team members to help them grow and develop
  • Oversee Nudge Unit budgeting and operations across its portfolio of health system and grant funded projects
  • Oversee the planning and execution of Nudge Unit hosted events including the Annual Nudges in Health Care Symposium which draws an international audience of 200 clinicians, researchers, and operational stakeholders
  • Hold Nudge Unit Office Hours to provide consultation to care teams and researchers seeking solutions to challenging problems
  • Cultivate and manage internal health system stakeholder relationships with executive leadership, informatics partners, clinical and operational leaders to ensure project support and prioritization and remove obstacles as necessary
  • Work with the Center for Health Care Innovation Communications Director to disseminate Nudge Unit communications and learnings via the Nudge Unit website, social media, and other communications channels
  • Collaborate on health care innovation efforts with other leaders and staff at the Center for Health Care Innovation and associated groups at Penn Medicine


Director Level D will have these same accountabilities as Director Level C:
  • Oversee the design and execution of Nudge Unit health system request for proposal supported projects and coordinate Nudge Unit supported clinical teams towards executing project goals
  • Lead the creation of a strategy and toolkits for stakeholder engagement, contextual research, intervention design, rapid experimentation, and implementation across all Nudge Unit projects
  • Oversee personnel management for Nudge Unit staff and work with team members to help them grow and develop
  • Oversee Nudge Unit budgeting and operations across its portfolio of health system and grant funded projects
  • Hold Nudge Unit Office Hours to provide consultation to care teams and researchers seeking solutions to challenging problems
  • Cultivate and manage internal health system stakeholder relationships with executive leadership, informatics partners, clinical and operational leaders to ensure project support and prioritization and remove obstacles as necessary
  • Work with the Center for Health Care Innovation Communications Director to disseminate Nudge Unit communications and learnings via the Nudge Unit website, social media, and other communications channels
  • Collaborate on health care innovation efforts with other leaders and staff at the Center for Health Care Innovation and associated groups at Penn Medicine

Additional accountabilities for Director Level D role:
  • Oversee the design and execution of Nudge Unit extamural grant funded digital health intervention projects using the Way to Health platform
  • Oversee the establishment of a research core for the Nudge Unit Way to Drive app to enable a sustainable model for research collaborations using the Way to Health platform
  • Engage high level external stakeholders including policy makers, health system, insurance, and industry executives to cultivate new partnerships to test and implement nudge interventions on a broad scale
  • Oversee efforts to craft economic analyses and business cases supporting further investment beyond high impact pilots

Minimum Degree Requirements and Experience Required:
  • Director C - Bachelor's degree and 7-10 years experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience required.
  • Director D - Master's degree and 5-7 years of experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience required.
  • Demonstrated ability to complete complex and thoughtful work
  • Background in health care a plus, whether as a clinician (RN, PT, SW, etc) or in health care management or innovation
  • Experience in application of behavioral science, implementation science, informatics, and/or design thinking a plus
  • Additional experience required to qualify for Director Level D: experience with development and implementation of digital health interventions, high-level industry and health system stakeholder engagement, and experience in business analysis
