Assistant Professor of Ceramics-Sculpture, Tenure-Track
 

Responsibilities:    Starting Fall 2023. Teach all courses in ceramics, sculpture and 3D Design. The successful candidate will be able to teach all levels of undergraduate ceramics and sculpture, maintain equipment for the respective studios. Additional expertise in jewelry, warm glass work and welding are desirable. The successful candidate will demonstrate an ability to develop curriculum as is necessary, working in a collegial atmosphere with fellow Visual and Theatre Arts faculty. Advise
BFA students in academic and career planning. Service is an important part of the faculty role at UT Martin. The Department expects that the new faculty member will continue the long tradition of the Martin Empty Bowls Project, one of the Departments’ longest/largest community service projects. Candidates are expected to maintain an active and professional creative or research practice that supports their teaching in productive ways.


Studio Equipment:     The Sculpture studio has numerous hand tools, drill press, table saw, compound mitre saw, metals chop saw, router table, small tabletop lathe, welder, paint spray booth. Two small warm glass kilns, two small copper enameling kilns.  The Ceramics studio has 16 Shimpo Whisper wheels, two Amaco kickwheels, two glaze spray booths, drying cabinets, damp cabinets, three ware carts, a Peter Pugger and a Soldner clay mixer.  One front loading electric Olympic kiln, one top loading electric L & L kiln,one Olympic downdraft 14 cf gas kiln, one Olympic Raku kiln (located in outdoor sculpture patio) and one Olympic downdraft 24 cf gas car kiln. 


Qualifications:    An MFA in Ceramics is required with additional experience teaching Sculpture preferred.  Two years teaching at the college or university level beyond the TA position preferred. Knowledge of current trends and materials in contemporary sculpture and ceramics required. Additional knowledge and skills in jewelry, fibers, warm glass and woodwork is preferred. Participate in development of curriculum, and advise students in academic and career planning.  Departmental service is also expected. Demonstrated excellence in teaching.  Demonstrated excellence in written communication skills.  Salary commensurate with qualifications and experience.
 

The University:        The University of Tennessee at Martin is a primary campus in the University of Tennessee System. The campus is located in Northwest Tennessee approximately 125 miles north of Memphis and 150 miles west of Nashville. The University of Tennessee at Martin has a combined graduate and undergraduate enrollment of approximately 7,000 students. The Department of
Visual and Theatre Arts:    The department currently has ten full-time faculty members who support the Bachelor of Fine Arts degree program with areas of emphasis in Visual Art, Art Education, Dance Education, Graphic Design, and Theatre and the Bachelor of Art in Arts in Studio, Dance, Graphic Design, Theatre Tech and Acting. There are approximately 95 majors in the BFA and BAA programs..
