Lawrence University of Wisconsin, an undergraduate liberal arts college and conservatory of music located in Appleton, Wisconsin, invites applications for a full-time Instructor of Tuba and Euphonium to begin September 1, 2023

RESPONSIBILITIES

We are seeking a creative, collaborative colleague to join our forward-looking community as a studio teacher of Tuba and Euphonium. Related activities include studio classes, coaching chamber music, preparing students for recitals, performance with faculty ensembles and recruiting. Since the Tuba and Euphonium studio along with related activities will fill approximately half of a fulltime load, we are looking at candidates who can meaningfully contribute in other areas. Possibilities include, but are not limited to: music theory, community collaboration coordinator, chamber music coordinator, music production, entrepreneurship, etc. Candidates will also be expected to teach in Lawrence’s flagship First-Year Studies program.

Additional responsibilities may include student advising and committee work when appropriate.

QUALIFICATIONS

Demonstrated excellence in tuba and euphonium teaching and performance in a wide range of styles including Western classical, new music, and contemporary. Familiarity with improvisation, jazz, and global traditions is a plus. Must be able to bring our students to the highest levels of artistic and musical mastery in a nurturing, student-centered environment. A background in community engagement and collaboration is desirable, as is a background in entrepreneurship. An active, engaged performer is preferred. Appropriate terminal degree or equivalent experience. A record of successful collegiate teaching and recruiting is desirable. Although this is a Conservatory position, strong support of the ideals and goals of a broad liberal arts education is a must.

COMMITMENT TO DIVERSITY

Lawrence University is committed to providing equal access and opportunity to qualified individuals of all backgrounds and to diversifying its faculty and staff. We welcome applications from individuals who will help us create a more inclusive Lawrence by: (1) further diversifying the faculty; and/or (2) demonstrating experience with successful diversity-related initiatives, creative activity or research; and (3) demonstrating interest in developing inclusive pedagogy to address the needs of a diverse student body, particularly as these pedagogies relate to antiracism and decolonizing the curriculum. We strongly encourage candidates from all backgrounds to apply.

RANK AND SALARY

Full-time non-tenure line position with three-year renewable contract. Salary commensurate with qualifications and experience.

APPLICATIONS Should include cover letter, curriculum vitae, teaching philosophy, a statement on your experience related to addressing issues of diversity, equity, inclusion, and antiracism in an academic setting and ways that you would contribute to these efforts at Lawrence, recordings of recent live performances, and academic transcripts. Additionally, provide contact information for two references who may be contacted directly by Lawrence University, and provide any additional material that demonstrates your qualifications for the position. We would like all documents submitted digitally as either Word documents or PDF files, and all video and audio files submitted as links to external sites.

The Conservatory has an enviable reputation for producing outstanding musician/scholars, and our robust double degree program attracts fine musicians who have strong interests in a multitude of academic areas.
