CHAIR, DEPARTMENT OF HISTORY

 

Howard University (HU) invites applications and nominations for the position of Chair of the Department of History. When there is an opening for Department Chair, it is our standard practice to open the search to external candidates, as well internal candidates, to ensure the largest pool of top candidates.

 

The Department of History seeks a dynamic and energetic leader with the ability to effectively engage faculty, staff, students, and external constituencies in a collegial and collaborative manner. The Chair will have a strong record of excellence in academic leadership, faculty development, and financial management. This is an outstanding opportunity for a visionary leader at an exciting time in the Department. 

 

The Chair represents the Department as part of the college’s leadership team and is responsible for ensuring the academic and curricular integrity of the department at the undergraduate and graduate levels. The Chair supervises, evaluates, and manages the Department’s faculty and staff and serves as a liaison and advocate for the department’s faculty and students. The Chair will be expected to lead the Department by modeling a strong and ongoing commitment to scholarship, teaching, and grantsmanship. Working in partnership with the senior administration of the College of Arts & Science, the successful candidate will be expected to embrace and contribute to the mission of the University. 

 

Desired Qualifications

  • Earned PhD in History from an accredited institution;
  • Record of professional accomplishments and scholarship that meet the qualifications for appointment to the rank of Professor in the college;
  • Strong and sustained record of research;
  • Administrative, personnel, and budgetary experience at the department level;
  • Evidence of a commitment to securing external funding;
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills;
  • Demonstrated ability to manage a complex academic organization and work effectively with colleagues across divisions;
  • Evidence of effective community involvement, outreach, leadership, and demonstrated ability to forge partnerships and build productive relationships with both campus and external constituencies including alumni;
  • Interest in the recruitment and retention of a diverse faculty and staff, as well as commitment to teambuilding, supervision, and staff support for professional development; and
  • Demonstrated commitment to student centeredness and optimization of student learning.

Procedure for Candidacy

Applications should include a cover letter and a curriculum vitae, names of four references who would be prepared to provide letters of recommendation on request, and documentation of major grants and awards received.

Applications and nominations will be accepted until the position is filled. Review of materials will begin January 6, 2023. The desired start is in July 2023.
