Salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience. This position is an Administrator III in the California State University Management Personnel Plan (MPP). Under this plan, incumbents are subject to normal management reviews and serve at the pleasure of the University President. Cal Poly Humboldt sits on the traditional homelands of the Wiyot people in what is currently called Arcata, CA. The Wiyot people call the area Goudi'ni (over in the woods). Position Summary:

The College of Extended Education & Global Engagement (CEEGE) Dean provides innovative leadership, and works collaboratively with the Office of the Provost, academic colleges and departments, and campus services. The Dean will join Cal Poly Humboldt in this transformative time of becoming the state's third polytechnic, to envision and enact a strategy to address the evolving market of professional, extended, and continuing education. ­­­The Dean will continue to build upon the unwavering commitment for student success, by offering relevant programs that are engineered specifically for the non-traditional student for career advancement, career change, and personal growth. In addition, the Dean will provide leadership for International Programs at Cal Poly Humboldt, including recruitment and retention of international students and faculty, and coordination of study abroad opportunities for domestic students. The Dean will provide guidance for enrollment management, strategic partnerships, and financial and risk management while adhering to immigration regulations. The Extended Education portfolio includes: Leadership Studies, one of the gems of the CSU degree completion programs, Master of Social Work with an emphasis on working in rural and indigenous communities, professional certificates, open university, special session courses, extension credit programs, summer session and programs, youth programs, credit and non-credit programs for professional and workforce development, Osher Lifelong Learning Institute, international programs, international students and faculty, study abroad and personal enrichment.

Key Responsibilities:

Administration & Program Development
  • Oversight and responsibility of self-support programs, including development and implementation of procedures, policies, and best practices for various leisure and lifelong learning classes, youth programs, training and workshops.
  • In partnership with the deans of the academic colleges, develop and implement procedures that support policies and best practices for development of degree and certificate programs, outreach, marketing, and recruitment, and support of student success from application through graduation, and beyond.
  • Hiring authority for CEEGE staff, faculty, and non-credit instructors. This includes creating contracts, background checks, and evaluations.
  • Administrative oversight of summer session, including courses aimed at matriculated undergraduate students, study abroad and field courses, and college bridge programs for high school students.
  • Responsible for overall fiscal management of a $3 million and growing budget, accounting and reconciliation, and maintenance of sufficient reserves. Requires compliance with system directives, including Executive Order 1099.
  • Oversight and responsibility for public administration and marketing of Extended Education and Global Engagement to the public and press, and for student recruitment through multiple instruments including digital, print, and other media.
  • Responsible for enrollment management and the effective oversight of the use of information technology for registration, records, enrollment services and daily operations. Ensure compliance with FERPA regulations.

  • International Programs
  • Serve as the chief academic and administrative officer for Humboldt's Global Engagement efforts, serve as the Senior International Officer of the University requiring understanding of the federal immigration rules associated with F1, J1 and H1B visas.
  • Provide leadership and oversight for campus Global Engagement initiatives, including: oversight of international partnerships, ensuring compliance with state and federal regulations, leading collaborations across campus with academic departments and student services, and supervising staff responsible for delivering service to international students, faculty, and Study Abroad.
  • Lead University in development of a comprehensive global engagement strategy.
  • Share responsibility with Risk Management for monitoring risk associated with the international travel of Humboldt personnel or students.
  • Collaborate with Enrollment management and Dean of Students to provide direction and support of the international recruitment, retention and success efforts.
  • Senior International Officer (SIO) for the University serving as primary liaison with the Chancellor's Office on international student programs, and policy. Responsibility for compliance with relevant CSU Executive Orders, and for the proper execution and maintenance of international partner agreements. General oversight of University internationalization efforts including both outgoing and incoming students and faculty. Supervises the Director of International Programs, coordinates operations with the Center for International Affairs, and redesigns of the Center for International Programs.

  • Collaboration Across the University
  • Participates as a regular contributor to the Provost's Council, Academic Planning Committee, and the International Advisory Committee. Additionally, serve on ad hoc committees including strategic planning, personnel searches, technology implementation, and special initiatives. Serves as a member of the Provost's leadership team and represents the Provost on committees, councils, and formal/informal management sessions; and oversees and carries to completion projects assigned by the Provost.
  • Collaborates with campus partners to address campus strategic priorities and assure alignment of academic technologies with campus technology infrastructure.
  • State-wide Service: Participates in the California State University Extended Education Commission, which advises the CSU Chancellor on state-wide issues related to extended education; serves as the campus liaison with the Professional and Continuing Education team at the CSU Chancellor's Office; participates in system-wide PACE Deans meetings. Other state-wide initiatives as assigned.
  • Takes an active role in helping to embed the values of diversity, equity, and inclusion in all aspects of University work, in every division, and participates at least once annually in professional and/or leadership development opportunities that will contribute to campus efforts to advance racial and social justice in and through education at Cal Poly Humboldt and beyond.

  • Partnerships with Stakeholders Beyond the University
  • Public-Private Collaboration: Develop public-private collaborations to raise funds through gifts and grants for the University to support specific programs and enterprises.
  • Community Program Development: Responsible for the creation and implementation of the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute for seniors (1000+ members). Workforce Development: Negotiate and develop custom workforce development and educational/training programs. Participate as an active member of the local business community.
  • Development and acquisition of grants and gifts from local and national funding sources. Also, responsible for administration of grants and gifts.

  • Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Associated with this Position Include:
  • Demonstrated knowledge of public administration, experience building and sustaining collaborative working relationships with a variety of individuals from diverse backgrounds.
  • Must have advanced oral and written communication skills, have the ability to effectively communicate with all levels within the university, and establish and maintain productive, effective, and inclusive working relationships amongst diverse populations including staff, faculty, administration, students, internal and external constituents.
  • Advanced knowledge of budgetary and fiscal processes, along with extensive knowledge of principles, methods of public administration, and fiscal management.
  • Ability to initiate curriculum innovation and develop programs, along with planning and executing a variety of offerings in order to generate substantial revenue for the self-support unit.
  • Demonstrated ability to research, understand, and adhere to institutional policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of fundraising, grant writing and reporting.
  • Knowledge of higher education programming, curriculum standards, and implementation of courses, degrees, certificate of study, programs, and courses for credit and non-credit.
  • Knowledge of enrollment management, registration processes, and financial business services.
  • Must have strong organizational skills, attention to detail, ability to investigate and problem solve, operate with diplomacy and professionalism at all times.
  • Demonstrated commitment and/or experience promoting and fostering a working (or learning) environment that is supportive of individuals from diverse backgrounds and sensitivity to cross-cultural perspectives and experiences.
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain the highest standards of customer and academic excellence.
  • Competency with sustainability and environmental awareness, equity and social justice.

  • Minimum Qualifications:
  • An earned terminal degree from an accredited institution of higher education.
  • Five years of leadership position in a complex organization with direct supervision of employees.
  • Evidence of successful administration and development of self-supporting programs and budget oversight.
  • Knowledgeable of immigration issues, documents and visas.
  • Demonstrated commitment to fostering diversity through securing international students and supporting study abroad opportunities.
  • Demonstrated experience with strategic planning, developing and implementing program assessments, conducting data analysis, developing and implementing improvement plans, preparing professional reports, proposals and presentations.
  • Evidence of positive relationship building with individuals from diverse backgrounds.

  • Preferred Qualifications:
  • An earned doctorate degree.
  • Experience as dean, associate dean or comparable position.
  • Familiarity with CSU Extended Education policies and procedures.
  • Successful administration of international education programs, developing international agreements, and maintaining partnerships.
  • Evidence of effective and ethical leadership and management through collaborative and shared decision-making.
  • Understanding of organizational behavior in higher education.
