Job Description:

Amherst College invites applications for the Manager of Public Engagement position. The Manager of Public Engagement is a full-time, year-round position, with a salary range of $62,000 through $65,00 - commensurate with experience. Given Amherst's distinction as one of the most diverse liberal arts colleges in the country, the successful candidate will demonstrate the ways in which they bring value to and will work towards supporting a broadly diverse community.

The manager of public engagement designs and leads communications strategies and public programs that engage highly diverse audiences in art, community, and ideas at the Mead Art Museum. The overarching purpose of the job is to work with the concept of the museum as a bridge between campus and the broader community, and to create opportunities for interaction among members of the campus and beyond. The position is responsible for creating and implementing a marketing and communications strategy in collaboration with the museum director's office and in consultation with outside PR consultants and the Amherst College department of communications. The manager of public engagement will build and reach campus and community audiences through public events and a lively, reliable, and welcoming communications strategy. This work centers visitor experience with art, promotes community engagement, supports cross-cultural and intergenerational exchange, and proactively integrates an

anti-racist approach to museum work. Reporting to the museum director, the manager of public engagement works closely with the head of education as well as the entire museum staff and a range of campus and community partners to conceive of and collaboratively host programs and events that advance the museum's core initiatives.

This position requires leadership in inclusive, and anti-racist practice in museums and higher education, and takes appropriate action to support a diverse workforce, and participates in the College's efforts to create a respectful, inclusive, and welcoming work environment.

Summary of Responsibilities:

Communications and Outreach

Develop and implement a communications and marketing strategy and budget in collaboration with the museum director's office. May include print & digital advertising, social media, email communications, website, and production of print and digital marketing materials. In particular:
  • Manage the design, production, printing, and distribution of all museum marketing materials including the “Friends of the Mead” fundraising and program brochures, promotional cards, digital and radio advertising campaigns, banners, online calendar, Amherst daily mail, posters, etc.
  • Maintain email contact lists and produce e-newsletters
  • Run the museum's social media (Instagram and Facebook)
  • Work closely with Amherst College Office of Communications and, on occasion an external PR consultant, to manage distribution of press releases to key media partners.
  • Maintain accurate listings on the Mead webpages, google, etc.

Public Programs and Events

Conceive of and implement public programming each semester in coordination with the Mead's curatorial and education staff to engage the Mead's diverse audience of Amherst College students, faculty & staff, as well as the broader community and expand access to the museum exhibitions and initiatives. Work in close collaboration with education colleagues to integrate shared principles for hosting and facilitating groups in the museum. In particular:
  • Manage the annual spring Black Art Matters Installation of student art and festival on behalf of the Mead, and in partnership with colleagues and students from the Multicultural Resource Center, Black Student Union, and African Caribbean Student Union.
  • Manage requests from student groups to use and program the Mead spaces
  • Plan and host exhibition openings, typically once/semester.
  • Liaise with campus offices to host programs as appropriate for LitFest, Reunion, Homecoming, and Commencements
  • Develop and track program budgets, and attendance as directed. Seek outside funding when needed.
  • Hire and mentor student interns in communications and programs, as needed.

Antiracism and institutional transformation
  • Regularly audit workflow and decision making to identify unintentional bias or racism in museum practice, and work collaboratively with colleagues to develop antiracist alternatives.
  • Contribute to museum-wide learning, action-planning, and accountability measures to develop anti-racist practice

  • Bachelor's Degree, or in lieu of degree, 5 years of related experience
  • Five years related experience
  • Experience working in highly collaborative, mission-driven environments
  • Strong public speaker
  • Proven ability to host inclusive group events, from concept to implementation
  • Experience working with youth and/or young adults
  • Clear written and verbal communication, and interpersonal skills
  • Demonstrated and excellent organizational and time management skills
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Able to take initiative, work independently and collaboratively
  • Able to translate ideas into concrete action
  • Proficient in Google Suite, Drupal, Wordpress, and Constant Contact
  • Experience advancing social equity in the arts
  • Experience creating social media campaigns & tracking analytics
  • Basic web editing experience, or confidence to learn on the job
  • Experience with Constant Contact, or other email communication platform
  • Proven ability to make connections with people and organizations across identities.
  • Stated interest and experience in antiracism in the arts

  • Master's Degree in Arts Administration, Art, History, Communications, Education, Museum Studies, Performance or related field or 7 years experience in relevant field (ie, arts administration, community engagement, community organizing, communications, PR, event planning, museum education, or other related field
  • Knowledge of museum or non-profit administration
  • Basic knowledge of Google analytics
