Job Description:

Amherst College invites applications for the Assistant Director, Center for International Student Engagement position. The Assistant Director, Center for International Student Engagement is a full-time, year-round position, starting at $50,908 - commensurate with experience. Amherst College's Center for International Student Engagement (CISE) serves as an important resource to the international student campus community by building and supporting initiatives and student engagement that center on a global perspective. The Assistant Director upholds the mission of CISE to provide education, support, community, and advocacy to and on behalf of our international students and works to create and offer immersive opportunities for co-curricular learning and leadership development. Rooted in the framework of intersectionality, the CISE serves as a space where the Amherst community can participate in conversations that expand our collective understanding of global experiences.

Reporting to the Director of CISE, the Assistant Director is responsible for a range of administrative and programmatic tasks, from planning pre-orientation to developing effective peer mentorship programs. The Assistant Director plays a key role to provide resources and services, coordinate educational and social programs that foster international student community-building and intercultural growth, and create opportunities for international students to express, learn from, and value individual and intersecting identities.

The Assistant Director of CISE will work collaboratively on shared projects and initiatives with the constitutive departments of the Office of Identity and Cultural Resources— composed of Amherst's six identity/affinity-based resource center departments, including: the Center for International Student Engagement, Center for Religious and Spiritual Life, Class and Access Resource Center, Multicultural Resource Center, Queer Resource Center, and the Women's & Gender Center. The Assistant Director will work with various campus partners and stakeholders to fulfill the department's mission through educational, social, and cultural programming that centers and affirms the various communities the Center serves.

The Assistant Director will take appropriate actions to support a diverse workforce and participate in the College's efforts to create a respectful, inclusive, and welcoming work environment. Flexibility to work nights and weekends is required.

Summary of Responsibilities

Management, Operations, and Supervision
  • Manage the day-to-day operations of the Center for International Student Engagement
  • Serve as a constitutive member of the Office of Identity and Cultural Resources Team
  • Engage in strategic planning and assessment of CISE operations, resources, and programming
  • Consistently evaluate operational efficiencies and opportunities to streamline processes
  • Supervise a team of 6-8 student staff, including supporting skill and content knowledge development
  • Recruit, hire, onboard, and develop CISE student staff and Pre-Orientation International Student Leaders in collaboration with Director


Program Development, Facilitation, and Assessment
  • Coordinate educational, intercultural, and social programs that enhance the lives of international students and will help to bring a global perspective to the Amherst College community
  • Assist in the planning, implementation, and assessment of New International Student Pre-Orientation, CISE Peer Mentoring Program, semesterly support program series for the Koenig Scholars and UC Davis Scholars, and programming during school breaks and vacation throughout the academic year
  • Collaborate at the divisional and institutional level to develop and facilitate campus programs, workshops, trainings, and other intercultural learning opportunities that support the mission of CISE
  • As a member of the OICR Team, co-create, develop, and implement programs that examine the intersections of historically and presently marginalized identities, their communities, and the various dynamics and developments both domestically and globally
  • Contribute to the development, and implementation of department-wide assessment program covering both programmatic work of department and department-managed resources


Student Support and Development
  • Meet with and advise students on support resources at and beyond the college
  • Work collaboratively with Case Management, and Counseling Center and other key campus partners to ensure support systems and programming for students
  • Provide leadership and organizational development education to student organizations engaged in work related to the mission of the CISE
  • Opportunity to learn about F-1/J-1 visa regulations; dependent upon eligibility and interest, engage in introductory level international student advising and serve as a Designated School Official (DSO) in the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS)


Content Development and Communications
  • Oversee weekly CISE newsletter communications and social media
  • Manage the creation of promotional materials
  • Maintain the website to include more dynamic and all-encompassing resources for international students
  • Engage in communications to further anchor global realities across the College
  • Develop, maintain, and assess the social media program, with student staff input and implementation


Qualifications

Required:
  • Bachelor's degree in critical area studies (i.e. Black Studies, Women's, Gender and Sexuality Studies, etc.), Social Justice Education, Social Work, Higher Education, and/or related fields
  • 1-3 years of progressive experience working with international students in higher education, and/or global social justice initiatives
  • Cross-cultural awareness and competence and effective communication, both verbally and written.
  • At least 1 full year of demonstrated experience with student supervision and development
  • Commitment to exploring the intersection of international education and social justice
  • Program development, implementation, and evaluation experience
  • Experience with content management (design and website editing; email marketing programs)
  • Strong interpersonal, time management, and organizational skills
  • Proficiency with Google Suite, Microsoft Office including Excel, Word, PowerPoint
  • Demonstrated efficacy working with diverse teams
  • Ability to take initiative, work independently and collaboratively


Preferred:
  • Training, workshop, intergroup dialogue, and/or circle facilitation, design, and delivery experience
  • Knowledge of student development theory and demonstrative incorporation of said theory into practice
  • Demonstrated commitment to a student-centered approach in practice, especially with building relationships with underrepresented students.
  • Familiarity, basic competence, or more with Adobe Design Suite software, and/or Canva Design Platform
  • Knowledge of and/or proficiency in non-English language(s)
