Job Summary:

The Department of Surgery Minimally Invasive Surgery (MIS) Division is seeking a research specialist to join an existing research team! The immediate program needs for this position involve project management, administrative support, and research support for multiple health outcomes studies led by Anne Lidor, MD, MPH, FACS. Dr. Lidor's projects study surgical and patient reported outcomes related to minimally invasive surgery specifically focusing on abdominal wall, foregut, and bariatric surgery. This position will have the opportunity to work on a wide range of tasks that include supporting biweekly research meetings (every other Friday) by creating meeting agendas and taking minutes, supporting a team of undergraduate students by managing their onboarding and offboarding and day to day tasks, collaborating with other research staff and faculty, IRB submissions and management, and creation and maintenance of databases in REDCap.

Responsibilities:

Develops, designs, and conducts one or more research projects and organizes daily operation of projects and specialized research areas to ensure work meets established objectives under moderate supervision.
  • 10% Conducts research experiments according to established research protocols with moderate impact to the project(s). Collects data and monitors test results
  • 5% Operates, cleans, and maintains organization of research equipment and research area. Tracks inventory levels and places replenishment orders
  • 10% Reviews, analyzes, and interprets data and/or documents results for presentations and/or reporting to internal and external audiences
  • 40% Participates in the development, interpretation, and implementation of research methodology and materials
  • 30% Provides operational guidance on day-to-day activities of unit or program staff and/or student workers
  • 5% Performs literature reviews and writes reports

Qualifications:

Required:
- 1-2 years of professional or volunteer experience in research, administration/administrative assistance, communications, project management, community/nonprofit work, or related area

Preferred qualifications:
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
- Ability to follow research protocols or other detailed procedures consistently and accurately, with a high level of attention to detail
- Experience building and managing online surveys and databases in REDCap
- Experience conducting electronic record chart review and data abstraction, e.g. with using Epic software
- Experience submitting IRB applications and/or interacting with the IRB
- Experience with research, writing, and editing

Qualified candidates will possess:

- Excellent interpersonal skills, including the ability to interact with study participants and external collaborators

Work Type:

Part Time: 50%

This position may require some work to be performed in-person, onsite, at a designated campus work location. Some work may be performed remotely, at an offsite, non-campus work location.

The successful applicant will be responsible for ensuring eligibility for employment in the United States on or before the effective date of the appointment. University sponsorship is not available for this position.

Effective January 1, 2020, the U.S. Department of Labor Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) will be updated to require that positions earning less than $35,568 annually be considered non-exempt under FLSA provisions for overtime (see https://www.dol.gov/whd/overtime2019/ ). Based on these rules, if the person selected for this recruitment will earn less than the new salary threshold at January 1, 2020 ($35,568 annually), he/she will be an academic staff non-exempt employee, will be paid hourly, and will receive overtime compensation for any hours worked over 40 in a workweek.
