Job Details

The Mechanical Engineering Department at Union College of Schenectady, NY invites applications for a three-year visiting assistant professor position. An extension for two more years is possible subject to departmental need and budgetary constraints. We are looking for a candidate who can teach a wide range of undergraduate mechanical engineering courses in at least one of the following areas: solid mechanics (e.g., courses in statics, dynamics, and strength of materials), thermal fluid sciences (e.g., courses in thermodynamics and fluid mechanics), manufacturing (e.g., courses in engineering graphics and manufacturing), and controls (e.g., courses in system dynamics, control theory, and mechatronics). Successful candidates will also advance their research and involve undergraduate students in their research endeavors.

Candidates able to start on either March 1, 2023 or September 1, 2023 will be considered. A Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering (or closely related field) is required, but applicants close to finishing their Ph.D.s will also be considered. We strongly encourage applications from members of groups traditionally underrepresented in the field. Increasing diversity on campus is a key objective of this hire and a top priority for Union, one that is integral to our mission of preparing students for a globally interconnected world.

Union College is an undergraduate, residential, independent, liberal arts college committed to integrating engineering and science with the humanities and social sciences in new and exciting ways. Union’s mechanical engineering program is one of the College’s four ABET accredited degree programs.  We are located in Schenectady, a culturally rich and diverse city in the New York State's Capital Region, three hours from NYC, Boston and Montreal. We fully support interdisciplinary learning opportunities for students and interdisciplinary teaching opportunities for faculty. We are an equal opportunity employer and strongly committed to student and workforce diversity. We blend intellectual, social and cultural opportunities to facilitate the integrated academic, social and personal development of a diverse community. We value and are committed to a host of diverse populations and cultures including those based on race, religion, disability, ethnicity, sexual orientation, gender, gender identity, national origin and veteran status.

The application package must include: a cover letter, a curriculum vitae, a teaching statement and a research statement. The teaching statement should reflect on teaching experience, as well as information on how the applicant can contribute to the diversity of educational experiences and offerings and engage with students with diverse skills or backgrounds. The research statement should outline research plans and ways to involve undergraduate students. You will be asked to include names and contact information for three references through our online application system at jobs.union.edu. An email will be sent automatically to references requesting a letter of recommendation.  Review of applications will begin on January 6, 2023 and will continue until the position is filled. Questions may be directed to the chair of the search committee, Professor Rebecca Cortez, cortezr@union.edu.

Note: All new hires of Union College are subject to a thorough education, work experience, and criminal history background check.
